TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."

According to this statement, the arguer asserts that tradition and modernization are incompatible, and one has to choose between them.As to me,I agree insofar that there are clashes between modernization and tradition. However, the speaker begs question by overemphasizing these clashes.

Admittedly, some clashes truly exsist between traditon and modernization. For example, traditional houses were substituted by the modern gigantic monster namely skyscraper gradually.People in growing number prefer to surf on internet or watch television rather than reading newspapers. In a not dissimilar ways, writing letter concedes to E-mail,short message and telephone. However, these seeming clashes do not mean incompatibility which in fact could be reduced or balanced without abnegating tradition or modernization. There is no denying that even if modern medium to some extent dorminates in the area of information, many people still read newspapers or books for pleasure. Moreover, mordern art such as impressionism is popular around the world, some traditional art forms are still neccessary, such as the Chinese ink-and-wash paintings.

What is more,tradition---the treasure handed down from one generation to another generation, represents the wisdoms and truths of human life which could withstand the test of time.Even if many problems nowadays are addressed by means of advanced technologies and moder tools, the whole process is under the control of traditonal thought. There is no where more true than on the issue of education.Socrates, the philosopher in ancient Greek, had said: Education is not the filling of a vessel, but the kindliing of a flame. His educational thoughts are inherited and practised in the universities and colleges nowadays. Additionally, he advoted civil education. European Unions has carried out an educational policy named "Socrates" ,which aim at promoting the civil education. Moreover,Congfucanism,Chinese traditonal beliefs which advocates honesty and filial piety, still guides our behaviors in many aspects.Simply put, without these traditional beliefs, the mordern construction could found it bogged down in the only pursuit of material wealth.

Furthermore, tradition and mordernization could converge and ignite the sparkle of light. In the area of art, high technologies play an important role in the protection of ancient art pieces. Moreover, the perfect mix between the traditional Chinese garments and moden design surges a new fashion around the world. What is more, many architects began to include in their work traditional elements such as column, arche, and keystone.Turn our attention to pop music which is distinctive for its electric instruments. But different kinds of Chinese traditional instruments, for example zheng, erhu, are added in pop music and turn out to be a quite new style of music. In addition, not only can the history be recorded by the means of writing, but it can also be recorded vividly by camera or video, which allow us to record a far more true and objective history.

Deep down,we cannot neglect the fact that no matter tration or modernization, both of them have their own advantages as well as disadvantages. It is not the question whether we should abnegate one of them, but the question which aspects of them we should keep. For example, traditional belief regarding woman is inferior in the social hierarchy has been largely modified in the process of mordernization. We undoubtedly should abnegate this wrong belief.Similarly, modernization helps to tell us that superstition in tradition should be eliminated completely. On the other hand, the development of modernization is attributed to the severe environmental pollution. So we need to remember the traditional belief that human belongs to the nature, and learn to balance modernization and environment in the long run.

In summary, the clashes exist between tradition and modernization is not as incompatible as the speaker asserts. In fact, tradition serves as a guide of modernization in some aspects. Moreover, they can combines to work on our behalf. What is more important is we should learn the merits of traditon and modernization, meanwhile, abnegate the disadvantages to achieve a better society.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT127 - The vice president for human resources at Climpson Industries sent the following recommendation to the company's president.

In this argument ,the arguer recommends that
to implement electronic monitoring of employees' Internet use from their workstations is helpful to improve the employees' productivity in Climpson Industries. To justify the claim, the arguer provides the evidence that the software to detect employees' Internet use on company computers can prevent employees from wasting time, foster a better work ethic, and improve the overall profits. However, careful analysis of this argument would reveal that it suffers from several critical flaws and therefore is unconvincing.

To begin with, the arguer assumes that employees will spend all the time on work as long as the company install software to detect employees' Internet use on company computers. However,as we all know, the activity on computer is only one of the methods people use to waste time.
it is highly possible that employees would choose the other ways of recreation.I mean, herhaps they will began to chat during the work time if their activities are under detected on computer.Herhaps they tend to read novels or newspapers even sleep which can not be monitored by the software. If so, the arguer cannot bolster the claim that by installing software to detect employees' Internet use, the company can prevent employees from wasting time.

What is more, whether the work ethic at Climpson will really become better by the means of detecting employees' activities on computer? The arguer fails to provide any evidence or survey to demonstrate the conclusion. What is more possible is that employees dissatisfy this deed thus the work ethic is worse than befoe.Because they think their privacy is under exposure, and they feel distrustful from Climpson. If it is the case, how the arguer imagines a better work ethic at Climpson.Without eliminating this possibility, the author's conclusion is completely unwarranted.

Additionally, the arguer makes a hasty conclusion that monitoring the employees' activities on computer would lead to the improvement of the overall profit.Yet,the causal relationship between the more work hours and high productivity. There is many other factors that may also affect the employees' productivity.Maybe, the regulation of Climpson has some defects,or the payment of the employees is too low for them to work seriously. If so,even the company install the software, there would be no increase in productivity. What is more, the arguer fails to take into account other factors which have something to do with profit. For example,it is the high cost of transportation not the low productivity that reduce the profit. Perhaps the cost of products is high compared with the their price, and the profit is of course low.Laking such evidence the author cannot draw any firm conclusion.

In summary, this argument has several patent fallacies which render it logically unacceptable as it stands. To strengthen the argument, the aguer would have to demonstrate that the employees would concentrate on work after the software is installed. Moreover, the author should make a survey to make sure that detecting employees' Internet use on company computers will contribute to a better work ethic. In addition,we need more information about the factors that affect Climpson's profit.
