Does the study of history have true value merely to the extent that it is relevant to our daily livies? As the speaker asserts. As for me, I disagree with the author for the reason that there are many aspects of history from which we can learn a lot.

To begin with, we study, compose and create on the basis of the knowledge in the past. As the greatest scientist--- Newton once said: If I had been able to see further, that is only because I stood on the shoulders of giants. In fact, the giant that Newton mentioned is the knowledge in the past. This is nowhere more true than on the discovery of double Helix structure of DNA. The two scientists---Waston and Crick were honored the Nobel Price in 1967. In fact, without any experiment they did, their discovery was only base on the statistics and hypothesis of their predecessors. At that time, numerous hypotheses of the structure of DNA existed in the area of biology, but no one could demonstrate his or her hypothesis completely. The two great scientists generalized all the hypotheses and deduced the structure from all the statistics published on papers. In this sense, even the discovery of the structure of DNA seems has nothing to do with our daily life, it is really the greatest contribution for human being as a whole.

What is more, the great persons in the past own some virtues which benefit our study or our life. For example, we are still exclaiming over the fact that Newton found the law of universal gravity merely from the phenomenon that apple always drop to the ground. What an amazing scientific thought he had. As a graduate student majoring biology, I have to admit that Newton's scientific attitude teaches me how to do my research which is the invaluable treasure for my life. In addition, let us cast a look back at the process of social development, there are a lot of people who tell us how to overcome the difficulties and how to be a better one. For example, we draw tenacities from Cchill who distinguish himself when facing the Nazi's attack in the second world war. We learn innovation from the Roosevelt who enforced the New Deal to rescuse the whole America.

Additionally, history teaches lessons which are of great importance for our sociey nowadays. How can we forget the two world wars happened in human history? No matter how different the two wars seem to be, we cannot neglect the same result of the wars: a great number of people suffered hungry, disease, povelty and death. Numerous people lost their family, even the whole world was encompassed by endless panic. From then on, every country nowadays tries hard to maintain the peace of the world. Moreover, Chinese government draws the lesson from the environmental pollution which results from the industry revolution in Western world. Then China carries out the "Strategy of Sustainable Development" which aims at protecting environment for the offspring.

Furthermore, we are able to understand more about ourselves as well as society from history. Learning the past tells us who we are, where we are from. Without these realization, we will easily lose direction and passion. For instance, by learning the American history, we have seen such a legend, that is some immigrants came to the new land, then fought aginst nature, developed their own economics, and finally established their own country. The history could be compared to an epic that is filled with the words of tenacity, courage and adventure. All Americans could find
their places in the history, and the history in turn arouse their feeling of belonging which is beneficial for the development of the society.

In sum, the study of history contributes to our lives and society in many aspects. The knowledge in the past is the basis of the study nowadays. And the great man in the past have many merits. Moreover, history teaches us many lessons which help us to avoid another mistake. Finally, by learning the history, we can understand more about ourselves and our society.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT161 - In a study of reading habits of Leeville citizens conducted by the University of Leeville, most respondents said they preferred literary classics as reading material. However, a follow-up study conducted by the same researchers found that the type of book most frequently checked out of each of the public libraries in Leeville was the mystery novel. Therefore, it can be concluded that the respondents in the first study had misrepresented their reading habits.

In this argument, the arguer concludes that the respondents who expressed their preference to literary classics as reading material had misrepresented their reading habits. To justify the conclusion, the arguer provides the result of a follow-up study which found the type of book most frequently checked out was the mystery novel. However, the careful analysis on this argument reveal that it suffers some critical flaws and thus is unconvincing.

To begin with, one of the major problem of the argument lies in the follow-up study. The arguer does not
provide any evidence to demonstrate that the people in the first study is the same group which are surveyed in the follow-up study. Therefore, it is quite possible that most of the people in the first study really
preferred literary classics as reading material and they had not misrepresented their reading habits. Without eliminating these possibilities, the aguer cannot bolster the conclusion.

What is more, the fact that the type of book most frequently checked out of each of the public libraries was the mystery novel is too insufficient to evaluate the conclusion. The arguer fails to take into account the other ways people are able to contact with book. I mean, perhaps the people like literary classics prefer to buy books rather than lend from libraries. Or perhaps these people tend to borrow such books from their friends. Therefore, their reading habit cannot be manifested by the frequency of lending books. If so, the author cannot confidently conclude that the respondents in the first study had misrepresented their reading habits.

Additionally, the arguer neglects other factors which may undermine the conclusion. For example, whether the people who borrow the mystery novels will read them for interest? What is possible is that those borrowing mystery novels concentrated themselves on some task at that time which needed information regarding mystery novels. Maybe they will borrow literary classics after they finish the task. However, the arguer does not provide any evidence to support the assumption that the people borrow the mystery novels merely because they prefer to read such kind of material. Lacking such evidence, the arguer's conclusion is of course unwarranted.

In summary, this argument has some patent fallacies which render it logically unacceptable as it stands. To strenghten the argument, the arguer would have to demonstrate that the people concluded in the two studies are the same. Moreover, borrowing books from library is the main methord for people to contact with books. Furthermore, the evidence must be shown to demonstrate that the people borrow the mystery books for interest not for finishing some work

太牛了,各种例子,分论点也很全面了
