TOPIC: ARGUMENT127 - The vice president for human resources at Climpson Industries sent the following recommendation to the company's president.

"In an effort to improve our employees' productivity, we should implement electronic monitoring of employees' Internet use from their workstations. Employees who use the Internet from their workstations need to be identified and punished if we are to reduce the number of work hours spent on personal or recreational activities, such as shopping or playing games. By installing software to detect employees' Internet use on company computers, we can prevent employees from wasting time, foster a better work ethic at Climpson, and improve our overall profits."

In this argument,the author claims that in an effort to improve our employees'productivity and to reduce the hours spent on personal or recreational activities,we should implement electronic monitoring of employee' Internet use.The process of anaysis seems reasonable at first sight,while we can find several unwarranted places which make this argument unconciving.

The threshold problem of this recommendation is that we can find no casual relationship between eployees' Internet using and the low productivity of the employees through this argument.There are many factors may cause the low employees' productivity,such as poor management of Climpson Industries,
the little salaries the can get from their work,or even to be the over-wheight press they felt at Climpson Industries.Before rule out all these possibilities,the author cannot make his generalization sounded.

Secondly,the author hints that,because employees in Climpson Industries use Internet only to do personal things and have recreational activities,we should not let employees surf the Internet.While as we cannot find any signs in this  recommendation that the work of the employees in the company donot need any information download from the Internet or make business deal through the Internet,the author cannot ignore the possible that employees are surfing the Internet to do their work instead of wasting time.

Finally,as we all known,everything has two sides.The author seems ignore the negative effects of monitoring towards employees' Internet use.For my part this action may increase employees' press and cause their conflict emotion towards the company,and this may bring the lower production and higher resignation.I think only after the completely assessment between the advantages and disadvantages of this action,the author can bring out his suggestion.

To sum up,the vice-president should not only rejudge the real cause of the low productivity of his employees and what is the main reason for his employees' Internet surfing,he should consider the negative effects his suggestion may bring to Climpson Industries and how to avoid these negative effects as well.As there are many other means like improve staff's salaries or rebuilt a better management system,which can help Climpson Industries rise its employees' producivity and make their time been better used.The author should have a totally think over all these possible means and decide to use which one or two to achieve his goal.
