The speaker asserts that society’s lasting value has something to do with the artists, and claims that the society’s lasting value did not show any relationship with the critic. The assertion seems appealing at first thought, however, a further consideration would reveal that it is not convincing.


Conceding that there are numerous excellent artists who bring us durable value, for example, some masterpieces that we are familiar with like Beethoven’s “Fate”; Shakespeare’s”Hamlet”; Van Gogh’s “The sunflowers”; Monet’s “Sunrise” and so on. These arts, which have existed for such a long time, have some effects on the society. Beethoven’s music, give its audience a sense of beauty and sometimes is striking. We can learn a lot from “Fate” because it has some meaningful instructions the musician put into it. Beethoven created “Fate” in the most miserable time of his entire life, when he was almost totally deaf. In spite of deaf, he persisted on composing. The “Fate” expresses his idea of fighting for hardships as well as the resolution to hold on and to be optimistic. Van Gogh, whose works are not admired until his death, also shows an inspiring spirit, a sordid body accompanied by a noble soul. His “Sunflowers” gives us a external enjoyment and an internal reflection as well. Like forth, arts actually give us some impacts both on visual, sound and on soul.

Nevertheless, we should not neglect the contribution of the critics. Supposing you are about to go to a cinema, you may want to know which film is best worth the ticket. At this time, critics may play an important role on helping people to make choices. Likewise, help people to determine which art works to buy, they will consider all aspects like the aesthetic value, coherence with people’s taste and personality, etc. From other sides, critics can discover the inner value of the arts and therefore convey artists’ ideas and thoughts to the public, which will help people better understand the certain arts and learn from it. It is no doubt that in modern society, where people are annoyed by the pressure, competition and interests, we are desperate for the soul food. Thereby, we cannot deny that critics can help the society find its long-standing value.

From another perspective, critics help artists advance. Since critics have profound knowledge of aesthetic, it could offer precious advices to artists, which may help artists to find faults in their pieces and to modify them as to make them near to perfection. Dante created the edifice work of Divine, and Mark Twine created populace figure of Hark Berry Finn. Examples show that many famous artists in history have benefited more or less from the critics. Critics help artists improve their works, so, to some extent, they contribute to the birth of master pieces and therefore help to realize the artists’ durable value.

In sum, the speaker cannot just make a assertion that critics are useless and thus have no concern with the society’s lasting value, in fact, critics help us to realize the value of artists’ works and help artists compose excellent pieces as well. Considering these, critics, as well as artists all play an important role in achieving the society’s long-standing value.
