A new report suggests that men and women experience pain very differently from one another, and that doctors should consider these differences when prescribing pain medications. When researchers administered the same dosage of kappa opioids-a painkiller-to 28 men and 20 women who were having their wisdom teeth extracted, the women reported feeling much less pain than the men, and the easing of pain lasted considerably longer in women. This research suggests that kappa opioids should be prescribed for women whenever pain medication is required, whereas men should be given other kinds of pain medication. In addition, researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women.


In this argument, the arguer points out that men and women experience different pains so the doctors should depend on these differences to prescribe pain medications. To make his suggestion acceptable, the arguer cites a research concerning the different pains men and women felt after taking a certain kind of painkiller. Plausible as the facts are, we find they are misleading after deliberation, the reasons are as follows.

First and foremost, the arguer falsely takes it for granted that men are more suffered from pain than women. To begin with, the research only refer to the pain of wisdom teeth extraction, the arguer do not give us the statistics about the function of this painkiller to kill pains in other places of our body like the legs and arms, heart, lung and so on. On the other hand, the women feel much less pain than men and easing pains last longer than men’ maybe because women have a more strong volition so that they do not take pains as serious as man do and it is possible that women and men’ teeth structure are different and the men’ teeth root deeper than women so that they felt even worse pain than women. In this way, the arguer's claim can not hold water, in order to make his claim convincing, the arguer should provide us some statistics relate to the effect of kappa opioids on other kinds of painful diseases and exclude other possibilities that lead to the distinction of pain feeling between these two sexes.

Secondly, the research itself is ungrounded and imprecision. First, researchers only researched 28 men and 20 women, the number of men and women is not equal, moreover, the sample is too small to make a conclusion and the people who were researched may not suffer from the same level of pain. Second, the arguer should provide us the exact time people were given the painkiller, if they accepted the painkiller at different time then the result may be different since we know pains will fade away gradually after a period of time. The arguer cites a research which is unreasonable and obscure to substantiate the claim.

Thirdly, the arguer says researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women, which is not true. The reason, which based on the fact that painkillers act differently on different sexes while here the arguer substitute painkillers for all the medications, is unreasonable. Besides, it is a huge project to reevaluation, in addition, the arguer do not tell us if the researchers augment the dosage of the mediation to men then the result can turn out better. The arguer should consider more carefully about the feasibility of the process of the reevaluation and think about other way that can help to solve the problem.

To sum up, the arguer's argument is not persuasive. To bolster it, the arguer should reason more detailed and reasonable, provide more effective evidence and statistics relate to the research as well as ruling out other possibilities that result in the distinction between men and women.
