50."In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, allfaculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses theyteach." outside the academicworld in professions relevant to the courses是OK的,但需注意程度: 1. the quality ofinstruction 意味着什么? -----人文教养,专业素质,求知能力等 Eg. Martin L. King的话 2. to improve thequality of instruction, 就意味着要从以上几点出发: 1)让faculty spend time working outside the academic world in professionsrelevant to the courses they teach 可能可以提高他们对于专业素质的教学水平,以及和市场接轨的能力,但不是全部; Eg. 医学院的附属医院(+);

As an individual in this post industry or co called informationage, one receives large amount of instruction through his whole life. Definitely,instruction shows us how to deal with a lot things. And at this informationtimes, one can get them from newspapers to television program, from parents'talking to classroom study, from internet to magazines. It seems that a collegeis not the only choice to get education. However, people still resist thatcollege and university play an invisible part through one's whole lifeeducation. So, what does education, as a kind of instruction at the college anduniversity level, aim to?
As Martin L. King used to said," education must enable aman to become more efficient, to achieve with increasing facility thelegitimate goals of his life." In other words, that is to say, educationshould give people the quality to achieve it. The quality, including humanity,professional skills, the capability to pursue knowledge, good and love, and soon, works to shape a complete human being. It is the real goal of collegeeducation.
To achieve this goal, college and university should providevariety kinds of course, from computer science to history, from art to businessto enlighten its students; and what is more important is, to create a tolerantand equal environment for communication and thinking. Because the collegecampus maybe is the nearest part to Wonderland in this busy adult world. Ok,now return to the real world. In the campus, faculty are tutors as well asemployees to school, so they should satisfy needs from both of the school,which is depends on the funding from society, and the
academic circle,which calls for more research than labor force. In common sense,"practice makes perfect", so school requires its faculty to spendtime working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the coursesthey teach in order to improve the connection between professional instructionand the requirement of labor force. Actually, it works efficiently in somecertain situation. For instance, medical teachers works in hospital attached tocollege. They could get the first hand information of medical cases and traintheir students how to deal with it. It benefits both of the education asresearch and the training of professional skills. In another case, in somearchitecture college, the professors who are star architects cannot easily tobe seen because of their busy work. To much relevant affairs take the time forteaching, not mention the quality of instruction. To sum up, the relevantaffairs outside the campus may enhance the professional instruction (which isjust a part of college education), but they should be restrained in a properlevel.
In the aspect of other vital parts of college education, suchas humanity, the capability to pursue knowledge, good and love, and so on,there should be accumulation through a long time roll out the influence of utility.In this sense, too much touching the labor force market will not help, or evenmislead. And not the entire faculty is suitable to professional instructors;some of them may more suitable for pure academic research and teaching. Forfurther good and better access, more alternative choices should be supply.
Education is more about to shape a person spirit rather thansome kinds of skills. More attention should be paid to the foundation of it:the perusing of humanity and truths. Only in this way, will the whole societydevelops and grows.
