Q: Can I waive the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)? Can I substitute another exam? How important is the GRE?
A: It is not possible to waive the GRE. All applicants must take it, although applicants to the area of Project Management and Real Estate Studies in the degree program Master in Design Studies may submit the GRE or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Test scores are one more tool by which to evaluate an applicant. Keep in mind that the committee is also looking closely at your transcripts, recommendations, essay, resume, and portfolio.

Educational Testing Service (ETS) will administer the GRE exam this fall for citizens of China, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan. Potential applicants to Princeton from these countries should be aware of the following:
The analytical writing portion of the GRE is required to be taken in advance of the verbal and quantitative sections. It must be taken between July 1, 2007 and September 22, 2007 in order to be eligible to sign up for and take the paper-based GRE General test on October 27, 2007. This will be administered as a computerized test.
The verbal and quantitative sections of the test must be taken by the end of October in order to be reported to Princeton in time for consideration. This is the only time that the test will be administered. This single, fall administration of the GRE-V and GRE-Q portions of the test will be paper-based.
The Graduate School will only accept the paper-based GRE-V and GRE-Q test scores. These scores may come from tests taken no earlier than October 2002.
Exemptions: the Graduate School will accept computer-based GRE-V and GRE-Q test scores if,
1. the applicant was formally enrolled in a degree program outside his/her home country prior to October 2002, and/or
2. citizens from these countries are currently enrolled in the U.S. or another non-home country's educational institution (either for a bachelor's or master's degree work).

TOEFL - Must I take the TOEFL?
The Test of English as a Foreign Language is required of those applicants whose first language is not English, regardless of citizenship or residency in the US while attending other educational institutions. No exceptions are made. The Admissions Committees regard English proficiency as crucial for success in all degree programs. In order to meet the December 15 Fall admissions deadline, it is recommended that candidates take the TOEFL on the earliest possible test date.
Minimum score required for PhD candidates in History, Theory & Criticism is 650 (280 for computer-based test). For all other programs the minimum score is 600 (250 for computer-based test, 100 for Internet-based test).
Students who do not have the minimum score required on their English language test, (IELTS or TOEFL) will be reviewed but can only be offered conditional admission if their applications are viewed favorably. These students should plan to retake their tests as and submit new scores as soon as possible. Conditional admission is not a guarentee of admission and applicants in this status may miss out on financial or other opportunities.

Transcripts
One official transcript from every college or university you have attended should be mailed to the Office of Graduate Admission. To prevent delays, you should arrange with your registrar to provide transcripts before midyear grades are posted in order for them to reach Princeton by the application deadline.

我认为美国的教育理念是：如果你已经拥有了一个本科学历，那么说明你已经有了很好的学习能力，在你转换专业读硕士时，就可以很快地掌握，不需要像本科生那样学习，这样课程设置就会比普通的具有本专业背景读硕士的年限稍微长一些。以Texas A&M University为例子，说一说美国没有建筑本科学位的人如何接受建筑学硕士的教育 (一年的专业转换训练，如果a minimum GPA of 3.0，递交作品集，一般就可以进入两年的建筑硕士课程，这样的话，三年就可以毕业)，（而有建筑学本科学位的人是两年毕业）毕业之后，这两种人找工作是没有什么太大的区别。

Recipients of any bachelor's degree, other than a pre-professional degree in Architecture or Environmental Design, may apply for admission to the Career Change program. This program is intended to supplement the general education acquired earlier with the professional education for architecture. The Career Change program enables students who hold degrees in fields other than architecture to enter the Master of Architecture program.
The basic curriculum of the Career Change program is an intensive introduction + a three-semester sequence (3-week summer introduction, fall, spring and summer), comprising courses in design and visual communication, construction and structural systems, environmental control systems, and architectural history. The Career Change curriculum may be adjusted to suit the needs of each student based on the background area of their first degree.
Students who have completed the Career Change program with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and who have submitted a portfolio for review by the admissions committee, will be considered for continuation into the 52-credit hour Master of Architecture program. Some students might be required to perform additional prerequisite work before entering the professional program.
