迷茫少女窘境求建议

本人目前在美国一所TOP10大学念Econ master, 第一学期刚刚结束，但却对自己充满深深的怀疑。这学期一门课拿了B，还有另一门课拿了C-， 这个成绩在我们这个项目大概都是前无古人的，虽然在名校，可是我觉得自己的能力和智商好像跟不上这里的节奏。上课3个月却还是听不懂老师讲课，期末复习看了课件的全部内容，考试的时候却连题都读不懂，觉得自己就是一个学渣，压力好大。虽然读经济，却并不是因为喜欢才去读，对未来也没什么明确方向，不知道自己喜欢并且适合做什么，对比身边那些励志申请PHD的同学，自卑感上升到极高。现在面对着自己第一学期可能被警告的糟糕成绩，还有想要在美国找工作却迷茫不知道适合干什么的窘迫，真的觉得自己好悲哀，所以来这里发个帖子倾诉倾诉，也希望有人可以给我些建议。

嗯，虽然我还没出国，可能情况不同，但我想，我有过你类似的情绪和迷茫。所以我想说，其实还没那么糟糕，刚入学适应环境过程的这些可能是很难。这个时候，想未来其实没什么用。过好当前的生活比较重要，听不懂课的话就录音下来，回去反复听，看不懂的课件，就弄清楚为什么看不懂，是知识性的还是语言性的，知识性的就多看相关书，语言性的就要平常多花点时间去适应英语教学等等啦。其实，只有现在你自己尽力做好自己能做的就好了，努力了以后会慢慢变好的，然后，要多和学姐学长交流一下，你的这些焦虑和迷茫，他们或多或少也经历过。还有，越是这样，越不要封闭自己，多和别人交流很重要的~不管是同学，学姐学长，父母还是老师啦。还有同辈间的压力的话，我觉得每个人都会有的，不是说不去重视，而是自己的收获和想要的东西更重要。还有如果说现在觉得没什么明确规划，那就多去尝试一些其他的方向，只有去试去发现才会方向，是否有适合自己的呀。最后的最后就是，每天多想想自己曾克服过的困难，那时的自己都过来了呢~~现在的虽然大了点，但是自己还是能努力战胜它的。
在同样的状况里，如果某些消极想法会让自己变得更消极，为什么不积极点想呢，你还年轻，还有时间去努力的~才一个学期而已，尽量让自己努力跟上就好~加油加油啦，你所经过的这些，别人都曾走过~
好想当时的自己也有人这样告诉自己呀~

so, at the very first hand (when you apply, or while writing your personal statmenet), 你當初選擇讀economics master的目的是甚麼?
just getting a master title, academics preparation for PhD, a degree from a famous university and/or etc...?

If it is Columbia instead of Duke, the problem is even bigger given OP 想要在美国找工作却迷茫不知道适合干什么.

One has 1.5, and maybe 2 year in Duke, i.e. still time for exploring what one really want, while in Columbia, it is just fall+spring+summer...

It's Duke, really big pressure and I don't know what to do with a low GPA like this in first semester. It's impossible to find a job both in US or China with a low GPA, and I may make a wrong choice going to Duke, since I'm not belonging here with such ability.....

well.......let's go back to the most important question first: 你去留學的本心是為了甚麼?

Low GPA is killing for graduate school application, but not necessary for job seeking....(this really depends on which industry / company / role)

I apply for master since I want to learn more and find out what is suitable for me, i choose Duke because it's famous and also give a lot of freedom to choose courses in various apartments, but now with such score, i don't know what to do next....

ok, I am not going to provide any "mental chicken soup" here, like:
1. I know someone marginally passed his master and still get a ok job.
2. you can add oil and chase back up the GPA
3. some job don't care you GPA much.
4. .............
these are something surly true, but it is too trivial to talk about - basic assumption is everyone knows these.


Actually, I feel that 来也没什么明确方向，不知道自己喜欢并且适合做什么 is a much bigger problem. Without a clear goal, it will be lack of motivation to fight hard for that. and master education is supposed to be specialized (it is not a bachelor at the end): you should have at most a few goal in mind before applying.

Truly, economics is flexible (and thus not specialized enough - one need to tailor it oneself). So what plan A, B, C, D, E, F is listed in your mind?
Public service? Private one like finance? or any other industries?

Another question is.......how to fix the GPA back up afterwards. To answer this question, you have to know what you get a bad grade for some of the course. New to economics? not enough maths background? Language issue?
You need a solution for that, which varies from reason to reason.

Duke确实是压力最大的master项目（之一）了。楼主千万不要觉得因为自己某些情况某个选择就一定是不可能的。你的未来怎么会被某一门课的成绩决定呢。
实际点的话，楼主可以早些找暑期在美的实习，大城市难找的话就夏洛特，萝莉，杜罕总会找到的，交际能力提升的话再练练编程数据处理之类的技巧，是可以争取留下的。
一定要常记Bellman Equation，理性人只往前看。

不要怀疑自己的能力。应该是selection的问题，你身边的同学多是想读phd的，所以他们很早就有准备，也知道应该在哪些地方去投入精力，而你可能恰好没有规划，于是一学期就过去了。。。不是能力的问题。
