本帖面向计划申请美国本科（大一或转学）且选校列表中包含common app申请渠道的小伙伴们。内容根据楼主自身亲身经历+多方经验汇总+参加美国本土机构讲座（因为记得笔记是英文的，请原谅我频繁切换中英文）汇总而来，如有纰漏欢迎大佬们斧正。

1. Common App Application Overview - 综述
不同于研究生和博士申请，美国本科的申请方式一般分为两种:
一是通过学校自己的申请系统申请 （同硕博申请）
二是通过第三方申请平台申请
而目前美国应用最广且影响力最大的第三方申请平台便是Common App和MyCoalition
目前Common App （https://www.commonapp.org/）和900多所学校建立了申请合作，每年大概会有100万+学员通过该平台申请本科
* 需要注意的是Common App最多可申请20学校 - 虽然一般情况下我们的选校数量都会少于这个限制，而且有些学校可以通过学校自己的网申系统申请，所以不太用担心限制的问题
1.1 Components of Common App - 主要申请模块
Common App 申请系统中最需要花时间和脑细胞的模块有四
a. One Common App Essay (for all universities) - 主文书会发送给你申请的所有学校，题目随机出但是有题库，稍后会谈到这部分内容 b. One supplementary essay per university - 每个学校单独的文书，题目会因学校而异。。。因此申请10个学校需要写10+个文书的情况也是有可能的 c. Activity list and Awards list - 高中（转学生可以写大一经历）做过什么？得过哪些奖？这个模块放在后面单独讲 d. Typically 3 references (1 from your school counselor and 2 from teachers) - 申请前联系好3个推荐人，建议一个班主任、指导员，两个任课老师

2. Evaluating Academic Achievement - 关于成绩
2.1 Three key factors of your transcript that the admission officer care about - 招生官主要会通过你的成绩单获取三方面信息a. Quality – GPA。你的平均成绩最直观的反应你的课程表现 Tip: doing a MOOC in place of a bad grade or show an upward trend. You can also show your class rank 如果个别成绩拉跨，可以试试上Coursera，Mooc，Udemy之类的补一门类似的尽可能高阶课程。还可以让该科老师给你写推荐信来解释你的努力。如果只是课程给分低，你可以提供班级排名。成绩单上一定要有评分标准，如90+是A，满分是100等等 b. Curricular rigor – school reputation 高中的名气，这个主要看招生官认不认识你们学校（你的校友是否有录取过他们学校的） c. Lapses and outliers – random bad or good scores 成绩单上还能看出趋势，看出你是否偏科
2.2 Standardized Testing - 标化考试
Depends on school: It can be SAT ACT IB AP Standardized testing is used to evaluate your academic achievement against the entire applicant pool. SAT等标化成绩会被招生官用于与你的同批申请者横向对比，一般学校会接受多种类型的考试成绩，也有的学校不强制申请者提交标化成绩。这个需要阅读每个学校每年的说明，具体情况具体分析

3.1 sections for your extra curriculum impact
Common App中总共有两个模块专门用来让你填写课外活动（高一高二的小伙伴们请充分利用寒暑假）a. 模块一Extracurricular activities - 10 slots to rank 可填写10个课外活动，按重要程度排序 - position (50 char) & description (150 char ~40 words) - grade level (9-12) - time spent - intention to participate in college (Answer “yes” for your *core* activity) b. 模块二Academic Awards - 5 slots to rank 可填写5个奖项，按重要程度排序 - Title - Grade level (9-12) - Level of recognition (School, State, National, International)
3.2 Key factors the AO is looking for - 招生官会从活动列表中获取什么信息？1. Special Talents – What are you uniquely excellent in? 你的独到之处是什么：组织能力？领导能力？创新能力？动手能力？爱冒险？钢琴神童？围棋九段？老美相信课外活动才能够定义你是一个什么样的人 2. Depth and Breadth of Participation – How dedicated are you to your activities? 每个活动的参与度。你是都试了试水（没什么不好的，爱好广泛，且能把各个活动串联起来也是蛮有意思的申请者），还是兴趣集中在一个领域。 3. Demonstrated Leadership/Impact - results and impact (put in the description) Tip: describe yourself with numbers 多用数据！

4. Crafting Compelling PS4.1 Common Essay Categories - 主文书题型分布- a lesson or failure (17%) - a problem solved (10%) - an accomplishment (22%) - an idea challenged (4%) - background, identity, interest, talent (47%)
Tip: - Personally meaningful, or even better unique 经历选择当然是你越有感触的越好，越独特越好。不用和别人比，和你自己比。 - Traits and characteristics – ingenuity, creativity, resourcefulness, maturity, confidence, etc. 问经历的问题多是想要看看你的性格以及特质，所以在写文书的时候也要考虑好你想要如何展现自己。这个和写小说时要用言谈举止塑造主人公形象有异曲同工之妙 - Personality – a sense of humor, light-hearted, intellectual, etc. - A clear path from passion to action 从兴趣到热爱再到职业理想，从偶发事件到主动探索到申请理由，总有一个线索指引你来申请这个学校的这个专业 - Explore experiences that shaped personal growth - SHOW NOT TELL 别说你有多有创造力，用个例子展现出来！别说你自己多有领导力，用一个组织活动的例子展现出来。言者不知，知者不言 - Cliché – avoid poem or experiences like learning to drive 虽然文书中写什么例子都可以，但有些陈词滥调还是要尽量避免的。写诗的美国人大有人在，别放在文书里，可以当作附加材料提交。 美国人还喜欢举考驾照的经历，大家都用一个例子就都显得平庸了。

b. Early Decision vs Early Action?Early Decision - binding obligation to attend Early Action – not binding
c. From whom should I ask for a letter of recommendation?Tip: Consider from a teacher in a class where you struggled, but they saw how hard you worked
d. Do I need to use complete sentences in the description?No, feel free to use abbreviations and bullet points
e. Shall I include something new in the personal statement or repeat myself?Something new is better but can include explanations and details of something elsewhere stated
f. What experiences can be included in the essay?Life experiences, academics, extracurriculars, leadership, athletics, summer Convey: creativity, personal voice, point of view, personality, authenticity
g. What is the percentage of students that is recruited through early decision?Regular decision is still the main source of students (~70%). Occasionally, the AO may be generous in the early rounds because you may have a higher commitment. But the difference is not significant
h. Shall I submit test scores if it is not required?Should contact the AO to confirm. But standardized test scores are recommended although they may not account for a high proportion in your admission decision.
