147"Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
I fundamentally agree with the speaker that tradition and modernization, in most instances, are incompatible, even reject each other. However, the speaker cannot arbitrarily claim that people must choose between them, for the reason that they are not mutually exclusive under some circumstances. People should not overlook they are coexistent and interaction between them.
It is believed that tradition usually means rigid and static, while tradition concerns reforming and fashion. They are incompatible, even reject and exclusive each other. For the supportive example, people should look no further than so-called generation gaps between young people and their parents. With the rapid development of communication methods and mass media, young people are more concern with fashion. They wear jeans pants in whenever seasons, which are deliberately tattered on the keens. Boys wear earrings and other decorations, while girls say bad words and smoke. All phenomena mentioned above cannot be accepted by parents, whose ideas are relatively traditional. In this case, generation gaps are generated, which exert negative impacts on the communication between the young and their parents.
In social level, there exist many controversies, which are related to tradition and modernization. In the field of urban planning, cities planners usually find that some old buildings stand on the position available to new buildings or roads, which are essential to the prosperity of cities. On the other hand, these old buildings always possess historical and architectural values that cannot be replicated any more, or they are typical symbols of certain bygone era and focus on citizens’ emotions. Faced with these problems, tradition and modernization reject each other. The best ways to address these dilemmas lie in moving the old buildings and retrofitting old ones to accommodate current needs. However, in most instances, these compromises mean large funds which are not infeasible. Therefore, the controversy between tradition and modernization inevitably and inexorably occurs in people's working and living.
On the other hand, people should not overlook that, under some circumstances, tradition and modernization can coexist and interact with each other. Firstly, modernization mostly evolves from tradition. In the scientific areas, the accomplishments of predecessors provide the foundation upon which offspring advancement and progress depend. For example, the heliocentric theory of Copernicus paves the way for Galileo's falling objects theory. And this achievement offers the basis for Newton's Earth gavial theory, on which the classic physics rely. Secondly, in art fields, though there are numerous innovative genres in modern times, most of them are based on traditional principles. The modern design elements and forms accord with the basic aesthetic rules--that is symmetry, harmony and balance. In music, popular types of music, such as rock-and-roll, are based on seven-note scale.
In conclusion, even though the controversy between tradition and modernization cannot be avoided under some circumstances, people should not arbitrarily assume that they are definitely mutually exclusive. With the development of society, people will create many ways to benefit coexistence of them. |
