41"Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."
While mainstream science plays a dominant role in the era of fast progressing of technology, nonmainstream areas of inquiry do have their own reasons to exist. After all, mainstream science is not the "magic pill" to cure every problem that the human beings face.
There is no denying that the part that mainstream science plays is, to a large extent, overwhelming, which is the reason why our world can move so fast in almost every fields aiming at improving the quality of our lives. With the advent of car, we can go to a destination faster than what we did before, and it is because of the mainstream science; with the invention of many medicine that are able to cure various kinds of diseases, we can live healthier and longer than before, and it is also due to the same reason, the rapidly developing mainstream science; with the telephone, T.V., computer, just to name a few, coming into being, we can communicate with one another and get information much quicker than ever before, which, of course, is far beyond the reach of nonmainstream areas of inquiry. What is more, the increasingly more new things are being worked out one after another, which will also enhance our level of living just as what they have been doing.
Although nonmainstream areas of inquiry do not have the equally status as the mainstream science, they do have their own reasons to exist, in that they can, in a sense, satisfy people by explaining the phenomena that cannot be fully explained by the mainstream science due to its own limited ability. In ancient times, for example, people there used to pray for rain and thought that the so called "rain doctor" had the power to hold sway over the rain, for at that times, mainstream science was even not able to explain where the rain was from, let alone to cause it to fall. And there were times, though few, that the "happy accidents" happened, people felt satisfied, to some extent. Therefore, people need the thought that, at least, some of them can control the rain. This thought makes the people of that time, in some sense, less fear of the unfathomable nature.
Great as Newton is, he resorted to believe in God in his old age. When he found something that could not explained by the science, he first tried his best to use science to experiment and think over and over. Unfortunately, no one can comprehend all things, however great he/she is. And then he was so eager to know the roots of every thing, he had to “ask for the help of God”. In this sense, he found a way to explain all the phenomena that he could not interpret.
Even nowadays some people still resort to fortune-telling to relieve the burden that the life has put on them when they find it is too hard for them to endure. A person can never be sure what will happen to him/her, and it is really difficult for one to decide which way to go is better when one face a crossroad. To avoid regretting, one often let the choice be in “God’s hand” or someone with “supernatural ability” to make the decision. Thus, even if the final ending is not so good, one can at least say, “It is my fate”, or, “God let it be so”, feeling not so sorrow.
To sum up, the world is always mysterious, in a way, to us human beings, and mainstream science alone is not enough to satisfy all people about everything, there has to be some other kinds of ways. And there are, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry.
Time is fleeting, especially when I am writing those disdusting issues and arguments. Shoot! |
