16. Some people believe that in order to be effective, political leaders must yield to public opinion and abandon principle for the sake of compromise. Others believe that the most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives.
Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented.
The symbol of effectiveness in politics is that the policies fully exercised by public. The forceful implement cannot last long in retrospect to our history events; therefore, politicians should learn to interact with the public, including the concession during the policy making.
Compromise does not equal to giving up the principles, when it happens in political fields. Rather, it means policy makers will take public voices in account and revised their rules accordingly. It not only shows the respect to people, but also expresses the hint that the process of policy making has the efforts of every citizen. In return, people will feel obliged to practice the regulations and have reliable impression on the leaders. When politicians win the public trusts, they get the foundation to be effective leaders.
The very first step to be qualified leaders is listening to the voice from publics. That is the database for a politician to start his jobs. They have to hear the complaints from the unemployed, they need to collect the opinions of farmers about the agriculture problems, and they should talk with artists in order to get familiar about current artistic issues. Without the function of carefully listening, a politician barely knows what the public indeed need. Without knowing the needs, the political regulations can rarely be the remedy of social problems. Just like a doctor show inability towards the patients’ diseases, how can he write the effective proscription to cure the illness?
Also, politicians should adjust themselves into the rapid society with dramatic changes. Though there are numerous great books about politics, the timely textbook is the current society these leaders are controlling; as all principle studied in political institution are origin from societies, countries, and individuals. When politicians stick to those canons, they will find out policies cannot be as effective as they predict. Because changes never stop, some policies which can work out in ten years ago might need to alter as respond to those dramatic differences. The information age needs more well-designed rules about the visual world, and some principles written in political books have to be revised according to the voice from the Internet. For instance, the boost of social media, like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, they offer a platform for people to discuss the hot issue on line. In this case, those politicians should give away their stereotypes that Internet barely influences politics. As more and more citizens get the rights to express their comments of the countries policies, government should realize the importance of participating in those medium, and learn to interact with the public through these social media.
Granted, sometimes the public will be easily radical and irrational. Instead of ignorance of the public anger, the politicians should pay more attentions to the judgments. Once the mass feel unsecure under the governing, they may have crazy seditions which impede the whole society’s stabilization, such as burning buses, lighting fires in buildings, and damaging the park. Only mutual communication can calm public riots down. Hence, politicians should keep in mind one principle: the well-being of his party is based on the well-being of whole societies, which require compromise and consensus.
The mass public is analogous to the vast ocean, and the politicians are the sailors on the ships. Without the careful coordination with the fluctuating waves of water, sooner or later this ship will devastated by the power of dramatic ocean storm.

从public powers always outweigh those political leaders来看，我没看出来你的观点。本题讲的是tactical的问题，而不是strategic。

我的观点是：公众大于政治家。
1. 政治家的力量本来就是公众所赋予的。
2.政治家的原则和知识也应该随着大众改变。
3.尽管有的时候大众比较极端非理性，但这个时候，政治家不应该不顾及公众的意见，应该及时安抚他们，并且站在大众的立场上解决问题。
我的立场是：political leaders must yield to public opinion and abandon principle for the sake of compromise. 我觉得可以在后面捎带一些对立的观点，就是在某些事情上，政治家得有自己的观点，特别是在大家众口难调的时候，能有一个明智果断正确的决策

不要随意误导人，看清instruction再发表意见。 你是托福版的斑竹吧？嘿嘿~~可爱的小女森~
看了下你的文章，发现了些问题：
1、开篇你的position太大了，且偏题。问的不是何者为重。
2、不明白你的第一段讲的是什么内容。adherents & supporter是两个概念，在一定程度上可以说是对立的。一般来说，政客竞选一定是代表了自己的team一方或是利益相关团体，而不可能是民众。这个类比有些欠妥当。同时，对于你的论据，也缺乏一个强有力的支撑点。所有的一切都是你主观上阐述的，你还缺少一个客观上的解释。另外，prerequisite和very first work这两个意义有些相近，可以考虑做些改动。
3、body的一二段可以合并，没必要分开，说的差不多就是一个主题。
4、body第三段的论点个人建议类似：an effective leader is such person who can choose the most suitable principle to the certain situation. 会好些，毕竟是讨论effective leader，这个关键词还是不要随意丢弃的好。另外，也没有那种能够adapt different situation的principle存在，针对不同的场合能够坚持相适应的原则比较恰当（政客虽然把原则天天挂嘴边，其实是最没原则的一群，见什么人说什么话。）。
5、Granted后面的内容太拖沓了，一句话的事情，用不着翻来覆去说。还有，那个moreover是什么情况，论据刚出，就换方向了？后面的内容感觉其实和第一部分如出一辙，换汤不换药。 咖啡盐 发表于 2012-10-11 07:43 static/image/common/back.gif
