38"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
Nowadays, watching television has became a important part of people’s lives, as a main media, it is a great source of political, economic, social and cultural information for the citizens in many countries. With the television becoming popular, it seems that reading books as an old way learning information and knowledge is not as important as it once was, people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books. As apposed to the commonly held view, I would insist that watching television couldn’t replace reading books as a way of learning.

In the first place, television tends to create passive viewers by providing instant culture. The vast programs the TV shown are mainly entrainment programs, which function mainly to attract people’s attention, reduce people’s stress, stimulate people’s desire and so on, most of them are simple and pursuing instant effect, few of them arouse actively profoundly think about so important problem such as the significance of life, the public hazards, the environment pollution, the past and the future, etc. As we know, eating only junk food does not provide us enough nutrition to healthy and strong, at the same way, absence of the consideration of the history and reality would impair our ability of conquering and reconstructing the world, which, in the end, would undermine our ability to live at the planet.

In the second place, television works better as a means of entrainment instead of education. The television, played with pictures, sound, always tries to interrupt any further thinks and force you going on. However, the trait of the television makes it unsuited for education, which need profound consideration and reasoning, sometimes, back to the before. At the same time, the television is full of too much temptation which will transfer people’s attention to study that it is hard to learn quietly.

Lastly, reading books remains the most efficient way for people to acquire information and knowledge. Although TV and multimedia has become more popular today, books due to its own virtue remain bloom in the TV age. At first, the books are more legible than television which always twinkling and not stop. Nextly, the books are easy to carry and need no power supply, which make to adaptable to different condition. Moreover, you can tick on the books and write your own ideas, which is in favor of reviewing and better understanding. As a result, the circulation of newspaper, magazine and books are still high. Books as an old way of acquiring information and knowledge still hold strong life force.

All in all, although In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was, reading books remains the most efficient way for people to acquire information and knowledge.
