Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The public need not pay for the public transport.
In the context of economic downturn, more and more people claim that the public need not pay for the public transport and the government should not charge them transportation fees. If that is the case, the public can have transportation service for free, for instance, they can have free bus, free train or subway; what’s more, they don’t have to pay the maintenance fees of highways every time they ride on them. It sounds like a Utopia to me. However, from their standpoints, it is the duty or obligation of government to provide such benefits to the public.
People who hold the above opinion may argue that we already pay taxes to government. Taxes mean we buy public service from the government. If we still need to pay for the pubic transport, it means we pay double fees. That’s unfair, of course. Also, in such a bad economic situation, unemployment rate is on the rise and people who have work get paid less than before. For the jobless and working class, it means that the expenditure on transport takes up much more of their income than ever before. Their life quality is certainly largely reduced.
Nevertheless, I can’t agree with their opinion or this argument, because if things went as those people expected, our society and government would bear a heavier burden, which is detrimental to both us in the end. As we all know, the government has to pay the daily expenditure on public transport such as oil, gas, labor, maintenance fees, etc. If it provides transport for free, what the result would be? It is likely that a large percentage of fiscal taxes will be paid on transport sector in the cost of other sectors, such as education, healthcare and so on. The government has no other option when carrying such a load.
So, the conclusion is at this moment our public needs to pay public transport. I believe this is the wise decision after considering the pons and cons.
