Dr. Peng Wei is going to join Iowa State University Aerospace Engineering Department as an Assistant Professor in January, 2015. He is currently at American Airlines, where he has been working on automation and decision support of airline and airport operations. He is one of the two key technical leaders in the industry leading "Cancellation Advisor", which was featured in TIME magazine cover story in March 3rd, 2014. His research is highly interdisciplinary and he has been publishing extensively in top transportation, optimization, control and aerospace journals and conferences. He has long term collaborations with NASA and was the only Chinese citizen research intern working in NASA Ames Research Center in 2012 summer. He received his Ph.D. from Purdue University School of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2013 with the Purdue College of Engineering Outstanding Research Award. He received M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Stony Brook University in 2009 and B.S. degree from Tsinghua University Department of Automation in 2007.
His research focuses on designing optimization, control, advanced analytics and decision making tools for complex aerospace systems and transportation systems. Of particular interest are systems for air traffic management, unmanned aerial vehicle, airline operations and airline operations. His ultimate goal is to build a safe, efficient, smart, green sky which makes the world one. His academic and industrial partnership includes NASA, FAA, German DLR, Airservices Australia, major airlines and top universities like UC Berkeley, Gatech, Purdue, UT Austin, Tsinghua, Ecole Polytechnique, University College London etc.
Iowa State University is located in Ames, Iowa. The engineering school is ranked No. 46 in the United States. The Aerospace Engineering program is ranked No. 26. The department distinguished alumni include Vance Coffman (Chairman and CEO, Lockheed Martin), Dennis Muilenburg (Vice Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Boeing), F. Ronald Bailey (Director of Aerophysics Directorate, NASA Ames) and Stephen Bales (Director of Space Operations Management Office, NASA).
