Issue 106 现实和道德
“All students should be required to take at least one course in ethics, even if taking the course means a decreased emphasis on academic subjects.”
Nowadays, the discussion on the ethics is aroused as the more sights are attached to it. Among of these, the issue whether all students should be required to take some courses in ethics becomes the focus of general public gradually. Generally speaking, I agree with the speaker’s assertion that all students should take at least one course in ethics, but meanwhile keep it not to decrease emphasis on academic subjects.
Undoubtedly, ethics plays an important role in regulate people mind and behavior, and ill-natured people without good ethics who are equipped with well technology will give rise to several serious damages to the society. For instance, the nucleus energy that should be used to generate electricity may be catastrophic when used to make bomb; clone technology that can promote the medicinal level may confuse the development of natural species if controlled by some immoral minds; computer technology that contribute a lot to the development of society by providing more convenient medium to communicate ideas and transfer information may be misused to infiltrate through the internet the center systems of banks, military and the like to pilfer valuable data or destroy stable system by hackers. All of these show us that the expense of being lack of ethics is unmeasurable.
The aim of education is to impart knowledge to students and shape their characteristic, so that, in this complex society, teachers have responsibility to give all students some course in ethics in order to cultivate well-round people for society. At the first place, taking some courses in ethics helps students to learn knowledge of technology more effectively. After received some principles in ethics, students can know how to cooperate with peers, how to respect to superiors, and how important to be honest. During the process of learning, students will not plagiarize others’ work, cheat in exam. All of these give students a good atmosphere to study in school, which improve students’ capability in grasping technology at the largest extent. Secondly, students armed with good ethics can promote the stability and advancement of society. After going through the systemic education in ethics, people can distinguish the right from the wrong, comply with the rule of society, maintain world peace. Thus, it can be seen that the course in ethics is indispensable for student to learn
However, overemphasizing ethics, even resulting in decrease emphasis on academic subjects is also not advisable choice in education for students. We cannot sacrifice the academic subjects to assure the study of moral standards. First, one without academic knowledge does little to the society in this period depending on it at large, since increasing manual labor is done by machine. Although one may be king and warm-hearted, he cannot find a satisfactory job and even has difficulty in making a living. Thus it is another tragedy we must avoid. Second, learning some academic may help students get a better understanding of ethics. Take history for example. When we learned the experience accumulated by ancestors in the old society, we will learn the importance of diligence, valiancy, progressive, ambition, democracy, fair and so on. Third, academic knowledge provides proper methods to do charitable deeds according to ethics. If a person is getting electric shock, the kind without physics common sense, probably lose their lives as well when they try to pull the casualty away from the wire, whereas the one knowing that can save others without hurting himself or herself.
In sum, it is dispensable during education for all students to take some course in both ethics and academic subjects. Overlooking ethics may lead to chaos and disastrous damage in society, whereas scarcity in academic knowledge may give rise to person’s imbecility in be adapt in society, both of them exert crucial action in the advancement of society. |
