159 The nation of Claria covers a vast physical area. But despite wide geographic differences, many citizens are experiencing rising costs of electricity. A recent study of household electric costs in Claria found that families who cooled their houses with fans alone spent more on electricity than did families using air conditioners alone for cooling. However, those households that reported using both fans and air conditioners spent less on electricity than those households that used either fans or air conditioners alone. Thus, the citizens of Claria should follow the study's recommendation and use both air conditioners and fans in order to save money on electricity.
The author claims a conclusion that citizens should use both fans and air conditioners, to save the cost of electricity. In order to support the assertion, he or she emphasizes a nation survey. Moreover, author also do some ratiocinations depending the survey to prove the rationality of his claim. But it seems that there is lacking of so strong assumptions that I cannot convince it.
First, the whole assumption is founded on the basis that all the houses use their electricity on cooling rooms. But it is possible that the houses which only use fans have to use more money to otherelectrical appliances such as televisions and refrigerators. Maybe they also use electrical fans to cool themselves and therefore the household electric cost is still on the rise. Even I can convince the assumption, the unspecific survey cannot guaranteethis contention, since the vast physical area is referred, so it is likely that all the respondents who are inclined to use fans, are centralized/concentrated in a certain district where the temper is not very hot, but the feedback respondents are in the high proportion. Thus, there is no reason to promote the region habits to the nationwide.
Second, even if we can trust the survey, author also ignores that another effect caused by the vast nation area that is we have to take into account for the varieties of weathers in different districts. It might be over 40 centigrade in the north, which depends on the air condition even in the house, but only about 25 centigrades in the south where fans are already enough to feel cool. So, the fact that we may face completely different tempers form the north to the south determines that the recommendation is lack of evidence to promote to the nation which has so vast areas.
Finally, apart form the survey and the weak assumption, not only the various weathers we have to consider, but there is another factor, caused by the vast area, which should be seriously treated. It is not hard to imagine the price of electricity may be in a long distance when we resident in the north and go to the south then. For the regional difference, such as economic factors or dwellings' incomings, we cannot equate the prices easily. Therefore, even the survey and the assumption can be convincing, we cannot omit the factor of regional prices in the nation, which may contribute the result of the research but those data cannot indicate the relationship.
In order to strengthen the claim, author should face the problems that cause by the vast districts such as the different weather and the various prices in the nation. Depending on all the above, the conclusion is lack of credence, so I cannot accept it. |
