TOPIC£ºISSUE 46 - "While some leaders in government, sports, industry, and other areas attribute their success to a well-developed sense of competition, a society can better prepare its young people for leadership by instilling in them a sense of cooperation."
Is cooperation more important than competition for nurturing tomorrow’s leaders, as the statement contends? Considering competition and cooperation are two driving forces for human civilization, both positive and negative effects of them among persons and society call for a balance for a distinguish leader.

In the first place, the chief reason why I should stress competition in nurturing youngsters is that, key leadership positions, especially in business, inherently require competitive spirit. On the one hand, business is sometimes described as war, with metaphors of war: 'killing' the competitor, 'beating' them bloody. From the point of view, that is why most leaders attribute their success to a sense of competition. On the other hand, individual and companies alike, for the purpose of survival and development, must continue to improve their products and services, as a result, the entire society is the beneficiary, at least economically. For example, in the past decades, thanks to competition, the mobile telephone has shrunk in size, increased in function, and declined in price. When it comes to telecommunications networking, it is the same. In short, a sense of competition is an essential quality to a leader in the business world.

If a political leader overemphasizes competition, then it undoubtedly has a negative effect. For example, Adolf Hitler, a leader carrying out a competition in the forms of arms race, had wasted a large mount of limited resources and brought a catastrophe to human kind.

In the second place, any leaders lacking a sense of cooperation are doomed to failure. After all, a leader's job is to enable individuals to get together in a group to do things that are larger than each one. Take Maradona, a famous football star, for example. How could his team ever win a game if he hogged the ball to himself and took whatever shot he could? No, it was the cooperation of the whole team that won the World Cup. This illustrates the point that a sense of cooperation is a basic character for a leader.

Cooperation also has some disadvantages to society under some circumstance especially in the business world. Monopoly capital serves as an apt illustration. Cooperation in this form is illegal in the capitalist world as it kills the spirits of competitions and holds back the advancement of the society.

Finally, in the era of rapid social and technical innovation leading to increasing life complexity and psychological displacement, a successful leader needs a delicate balance between cooperation and competition. Take a political leader for example. When it comes to election, especially major elections, leaders depend more on a sense of competition. Yet, when it comes to pressing social and environmental problems like the increasing ozone hole, thwarting specific plans of international terrorists, which simply cannot be solved apart from cooperative international efforts, leaders must have a sense of cooperation.

In sum, without a sense of competition, a political leader cannot win the election and a commercial leader cannot build, maintain and develop the prosperity, wealth, influence of his company. Without a sense of cooperation, a leader cannot have an effective leadership and solve the complex social problem. Thus, both of them should be transmitted to the future leaders.
