38"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

Nowadays, watching television has become an import part of people’s lives, as a main media, it provides a lot of resources about politics, economy, literature and art. It seems that people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books, and therefore reading books is not as important as it once was with the popularity of television. In many respects, however, I concede that television cannot substitute for books.

In the first place, television has more advantages than books in imparting certain types of information. A written description of a hurricane, tornado, or volcanic eruption cannot convey its immediate power and image. The picture provided by television is vivid, and the viewer who read books cannot imagine the detail. Nevertheless, reading books can boost the fancy.

In the second place, using television is restricted and sometimes discommodious, because television needs the support of electricity and signal. Traveling in other countries, sometimes it is impossible to get information from television. Books remain boom in the TV age due to books are easy to carry and need no power supply, which make to adaptable to different condition.

In the third place, the speaker rules out the possibility that in which some respects books are inherently superior to television as a medium for learning. The information in television is various. The purpose of the producer is to acquire profits from the audience rating, advertisements, and so forth. The producer may filter the information which is absolutely disadvantageous to attract the attention of audience. So the audience cannot receive complete and genuine information, and therefore cannot rely on television to develop philosophy and intelligent value judgment.

In the forth place, television tends to create passive viewers by providing instant culture. Watching television more will impair some basic learning skills of the individual. They are inured to be instilling information and thoughts rather than search what they really need for themselves. Gradually they will lose the ability to get what they really want initiatively which will be a great impediment for their further learning. Watching television is no indication that any useful information is taking place, so the viewer may not pay attention to it and render the information ineffectual in the learning process. If people like reading books, he can have a wild imagination of the literal information, which is always limited by the over-detailed reproduction in television. Browsing among books allow for serendipity-unexpectedly coming across an interesting and informative book while searching for something else, or for nothing in particular.

Last but not least, for certain purposes record information in books are advantageous to and more appropriate than record with television. For example, certain legal matters are best left in books: television is of no practical use in documenting the terms of a complex contractual agreement, incorporation, or the establishment of a trust. And television is of little use when it comes to documenting a person’s subjective state of mind, impressions, or reflections of an event or experience.

Both TV and books are important for learning and they don’t conflict to help us enhance our level. If they are properly used, they can complete each other and help us achieve more progress in learning. In short, only we recognize both books and TV are necessary for learning, can we make full use of convention and new technology that help us achieve more than ever before.

在第一段中你表明了自己的观点:书不能取代电视。但是在下面的论证中并没围绕这个观点。每个段落说电视缺点的篇章过多, 没有有力的说明书的不可替代性。我觉得用in the first place……in the forth place不太好,而且电视的优点不应该包括在其中。论证不够有力
结尾还不错,升华观点。
只是我的一点意见,如果有错,请多见谅啊
