题目:ISSUE 31 - "Money spent on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial."

I foudamentally agree with the speaker's assertion that investment on research should be encouraged, since our modern era has been marked with tremendous achievements of human beings, which could be, at least partly, attributed to the marvelous effects of the scientific researches. Yet, to broaden the assertion, the author also put forward a popular view, which claims that all investments on  scientific research are deserved regardless the possible conversial result. From the perspective of mine, I tend to agree with the statement with the reservation that the results of the researches, which may cause a disastrous result to our society, would be properly manipulated by appropriate mechanism.
At first glance, the balanced empirical evidence would lend considerable credence to the author's claim. Research, by nature, represents human's intention to explore the unknown and to solve the enduring problems around the human race. Motivated by our insatiable appetite for knowledge, we attempt to understand the surrounding environment as well as the essence of ourselves and the master of the means to make full use of available resources. Copernicus paved the way for the corroberating the observations of Galileo a century ago, and ultimately for Newton's principles of gravity upon which all modern science depends. On the other hand, in retrospect, benefits derived from the research, to a large extent, boost the holistic development of the society. The invention of engines pushed the Europe to the industrial era, in which the productivities as well as our living conditions had been dramatically ameliorated. Then, by the revolutionary discovery such as quantum mechanism and the theory of relativies at the beginning of 20th century, our human race began to march into the electronic period. In sum, the rapid evolution of the technology and advancement that originated from the scientific researches serves as the determinant aspect in growth of present economy.
While comprehending the merits brought about by researches, we should be circumspect with the vague result and potential hazard embraced by them. First, we should admit that before investing on a particular scientific research, nobody could figure out result and effect of the research, thus cannot make a judge whether the research deserve being invested. On the other hand, however, we could estimate approximately   which research could bring about more direct result toward solving on-going and pressing social problems. Compared to these clear-aimed researches, those which have vague results research should be hold down for a while, under the condition that many social problems such as poverty, famine, warfare and discrimination.
Further meditating of the issue, I found the speaker's contention is troubling in another crux respect as well. The final results of the researches are inherently difficult to predict. Consequently, we cannot simply decide that the particular result of a research is controversial or not. Also, some inventions such as dynamite by Nobel were seemed as nightmare at the first glance. Yet, the proper use of it, namely used in industrial, can also bring benefit to the society. Hence, it may be unfair to blame scientific research itself. The crux of the matter lies in how we manipulate the effect of a research through a proper mechanism, by which the direction of a research could be oriented toward a suitable means.
Simply put, I agree with the speaker's assertion since science and society will  undoubtedly continue to co-evolve. As long as the final fruits of scientific researches are manipulated in the beneficial way, investing on research is always the wise one.

I fundamentally agree with the speaker's assertion that investment on research should be encouraged, since our modern era has been marked with tremendous achievements of human beings, which could be, at least partly, attributed to the marvelous effects of the scientific researches.
At first glance,(多用于让步) the balanced empirical evidence would lend considerable credence to the author's claim. Research, by nature, represents human's intention to explore the unknown and to solve the enduring problems around the human race. Motivated by our insatiable appetite for knowledge, we attempt to understand the surrounding environment as well as the essence of ourselves and the mastery of the means to make full use of available resources.
First, we should admit that before investing in a particular scientific research, nobody could figure out the result and effect of the research, thus cannot make a judge whether the research deserve being invested.

Yet, the proper use of it, namely used in industryl, can also bring benefit to the society. Hence, it may be unfair to blame scientific research itself. The crux of the matter lies in how we manipulate the effect of a research through a proper mechanism, by which the direction of a research could be oriented toward a suitable means.
这句才点出了本质,(the crux of the matter lies in how we manipulate the effect of a researchthrough a proper mechanism, by whch the direction of a research could be oriented toward a suitable means.)

Simply put, I agree with the speaker's assertion since science and society will  undoubtedly continue to coevolve As long as the final fruits of scientific researches are manipulated in the beneficial way, investing on research is always the wise one.
