这篇憋了很久,
看了别人的文章和以前分析的帖子,
终于写了出来,
连例子都是别人文章里看来的.
144 "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value." *a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
My viewpoint on artists and critics is that they both give society valuable things. We appreciate the fine works of art. On the other hand, we should also see the importance of critics.
The fine works that artists have created are of eternal aesthetic and cultural value. First, the beauty in artworks can give us enjoyment and comfort. For example, many people will be impressed by the beauty of the shape of Michelangelo’s sculpture “David” when they see it in person although they may have already seen the picture of the sculpture in books and magazines many times. Compositions by J.S. Bach can give listeners enjoyment and comfort. So with their high aesthetic value, excellent artworks can give people enjoyment and comfort.
Other than giving people enjoyment and comfort, artworks can be thought-provoking. Inspired by artists’ experience and feelings, some works of art can cause the audiences to reflect on their own personal life and the social existence. For example, “the Crying”, a famous piece of painting by Munch, can touch the audiences with its strong expression of modern life’s anxiety and stress. While being a little unsettling, the painting can lead the audience into the introspection that we modern people may have had a too busy and fast lifestyle and may have neglected the peace of mind. Also, some films that are in a contemplative mood and are intended to make people think are also effective in provoking people’s serious thinking about life.
While we all appreciate the lasting value of artists’ works, we should not disparage critics, because critics perform important functions in our societies. First, they help us understand better the works of art. Even though we admit that everybody is entitled to have his/her own opinions toward works of art and the evaluation of an artwork is sometimes not about judging which is good and which is bad, we cannot deny that critics are authorities in the field of art, because they are often professionals and erudite scholars on art and know more than the common people do. Critiques usually can represent the opinions of the public toward an artwork and one can learn what most people think of the artwork by reading the critiques. Also critics can provide us with an interesting perspective to look at and appreciate the works of art which we may not be familiar with.
In addition, critics provide feedbacks to the artists, which are very helpful to artists. From the critiques, artists will know what the public’s opinions towards their works are. While retaining their originality and uniqueness, artists should also pay attention to the opinions of the public which are represented by the critiques. This is especially true in those fields of art where the works are made to serve a practical use in people’s life, such as architecture.
In conclusion, both artists and critics are indispensable for our societies, only they perform different functions. Artists create art. Critics help them to make art thrive.
