Can the uses of logic, precise and careful measurement thoroughly indicate how far we have advanced or lagged behind? in my opinion, to make a comprehensive judgment of how far we have moved forward or backward, we need a series of reference points assisted by tools involving wholesome value systems, objectively scentific attitudes. logic analysis, and quantitative measurement.

To start with, it is true that in certain realms, the right use of logic, precise and careful measurement can in some way make it clear to us whether it is a progress or retreat. For example, scores from scientific designed tests we get in schools can at least tell how well a student learn the specific disciplines in the rage of the book knowledge. And in the area of economics, the quantitative measurements and statistical data systems can provide you the average levels of financial groups or locations and nations. Take the important economic indicator GDP for example, countries in the global lay much attention to this number to judge a countries' extent of comprehensive strength and economic prosperity. China's GDP increasing rate have maintained 8 percent for the last ten years have obviously show the world a prosperous future of it, which bring in quite a lot of foreign investments that push China’s national economy forward in return .

However, in some realms such as art, literature and humanity, only by tools like careful logic analysis, precise and quantitative measurement can hardly determine whether it is a progress or retreat and the specific extent of the change. Is it funny if a great artist's works are judged by the total sales of its works? If so, Van Goth must be evaluated less than common artists considering the poor sales of his works, and the attitude people treat him at his time. Obviously ,this is not the fact. Even if the quantitative measurement determine the quality in some way, can the sales of Picasso’s works or the salary he got at that time objectively reflect the contribution he have made to the progress of the fields of art? They cannot, of course. What's more, in the field of humanity, shall we considering the increasing frequency of small violence as a sign of our social retreat regardless of the nice progress we have made in public education, comprehensive politics and reasonable legislative systems? Therefore to validate our judgment of progress or retreat, only by methods constitute of logic analysis and quantitative measurement can seldom render us a objective and reasonable indication of whether it is a progress or retreat in the realms of art, literature and humanity.

In addition, in the areas of personal personalities and characteristics, hobbies, the reference points to suggest how far we have advanced or lagged behind vary from person to person, form time to time according to the different value systems toward this aspects.

Therefore we cannot expect a comprehensive judgment of progress or retreat from the limited logic analysis and quantitative measurement, which are born to be not absolutely precise and perfect in some realms. And to make a comprehensive judgment of how far we have moved forward or backward, a series of specific reference points we get through wholesome value systems , objective attitudes. logic analysis and quantitative measurement are most needed.
