The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

In the memo the arguer concludes that the cheese stores can improve profits through reducing the imported cheese inventory and concentrating on domestic cheeses. In order to strengthen the conclusion the arguer cites a fact and a recent survey to indicate an increasing preference for domestic cheeses. Close scrutiny the fact and the survey, however, reveals that none of them lend credible support to the conclusion.

Firstly, from the status of last year’s sales on five best-selling cheeses, it seems that domestic cheeses are more preferable than imported ones, but the arguer provide no information about the proportion that the five best-selling cheeses take on the market. In addition, from the arguer’s assertion, we even don’t know whether the sales of those cheeses can represent the whole cheese markets in USA. It is entirely possible that there are hundreds of thousands of cheeses imported, although less popular than those five, but actually predominate the cheese market. Without considering and ruling out such possibility, the arguer would hardly convince us that subscribers would choose domestic cheeses.

(2). Cheeses of the World magazine调查的结果不可信。
Secondly, the survey conducted in a global scale by Cheese of World magazine is also notpersuadable. The increasing trend of preference for domestic cheeses doesn’t indicate that it is suitable for U.S cheese market which has its own characteristics. As we know, in some Europe countries, cheeses are their main foods and even more popular than that of American. The higher rate of cheese consuming in these areas will unavoidably result in raising the average sales level in USA. This (ignorable) fact will weaken the reliability of the survey which will play an important role on our decisions about the preference of cheeses. Even if the result of the survey is applicable in American cheese market, we still have reason to doubt the possibility that consumers will choose domestic cheeses rather than imported one if no evidence provided by the arguer that domestic cheeses are actually better and even cheaper.

(3). 在inventory上着手减小经费，并不表明把注意力放在在进口产品上就一定行。
Finally, the statement claimed by the arguer that the through limiting the stocks of varieties of imported cheeses and concentrating primarily on domestic cheeses can the company improve profits and reduce expenses is inconvincible. There is no evidence indicating that limiting inventory can result in the company’s profits. Even if the cheese company does make its profits through this way, whether this strategy is attributable is still doubtful. As we know the most important cause resulting in profits would be the relationship between supply and demand, without any information about the relationship, the arguer would hardly substantiate the claim that the cheese company would profit. Even if the arguer realizes the importance of relationship and through regulating the balance between supply and demand would actually improve profits, it is still hardly to persuade us to believe that the cheese company should concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses rather than imported ones, unless the arguer provide any evidence to support that stocking imported cheeses is more consuming.

In conclusion, the argument is unpersuasive as it stands. To convince me that the cheese stores can improve profit by limiting inventory and domestic cheeses would be more preferable than imported ones, the arguer should provide more evidence about the representativeness of the survey and additional survey about validity of the claim that discontinuing stocking imported cheeses can reduce expenses.
