Practicality is now our great idol, which all powers and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today’s world.

In the modern society pursuing “speed” and “efficiency” many people are forming a ideology that anything that cannot turn into practical, perceptive value or wealth within a relatively short period of time is futile and thus a waste of time. this prospective is not entirely evil, but in my opinion if we only focus on the practicality we will lose something important.
Admittedly, practicality plays an important role in our lives and it is practicality that makes our society go forward. To some extent, practicality is the source of invent. It is our human beings’ need that calls for practicality. To make us go anywhere we want efficiently, the transportation vehicles including cars, trains and planes come into being. To satisfy the burning need of food due to the increasing number of people in the world, many advanced machines come into being. To convey our ideas with our friends and relatives conveniently, there comes the internet. Because of so many practical things we are now living a better life than our ancestors did.
However, if we indulge ourselves in pursuing the practicality all the time, we will suffer a lot in the end. Inevitably, many people more or less have some defects in their character such as selfishness, rapaciousness. If they concern on their own benefits without considering others’ interests, it may cause conflict between them and break up the peace of the society. In the field of education, a host of students eagerly choose the academic disciplines of practical use such as MBA, Economic, Science of Computer, etc. on the contrary, some disciplines merely focusing on Philosophy, Sociology are not so popular among students. This is not a good phenomenon. If the tendency continues in the future, we will lack some experts in certain fields and our society will be unbalanced. In addition, factories emphasizing the output over invest usually pursuing the current benefits ignoring the future development. At last pollute the air and so on. So many problems arise due to the indulging in practicality, how can we solve those issues? I think we neglect something “impractical” , that is the pith of humanity.
Some “impractical” things such as morality, art, literature enrich our spiritual world. Morality tells us what is good and what is bad, regulating our behaviors. It contributes a lot to the stability of our society, although it cannot bring huge materials to us. When we appreciate some art works or read literature books we always find some inspiration and recognize ourselves clearly. Many factors influence on the progress of human beings not only practical benefits. Patriotism, honesty,   persistence and diligence which are base of humanity are also important. Without those virtues, how can we share a society full of stability.
In conclusion, as we know “time is life” we must try our best to produce many materials to satisfy human beings. But that does not mean that we can pursue the practicality and ignore those things that have not obvious practical use such as morality, art and so on. To make our society develop smoothly and healthily, we must not neglect the importance of the pith of humanity.
