Argument2 The following appeared in a letter sent by a committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres to all homeowners in Deerhaven Acres. "Seven years ago, homeowners in nearby Brookville community adopted a set of restrictions on how the community's yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted. Since then, average property values have tripled in Brookville. In order to raise property values in Deerhaven Acres, we should adopt our own set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting."
In this argument, the arguer concludes that Deerhaven Acres should restricts landscaping and housepainting to raise property values. To support the conclusion, the arguer points out that the property values have raised two times in Brookville because of adopting this policy seven years ago. It is a hasty decision made by Deerhaven Acres, which have three apparent fallacies.
In the first place, the arguer fails to attain the conclusion that the reason of the raising of property values was the performance of the restrictions on landscaping and housepainting in Brookville seven years ago. First, comparing the poverty seven years ago with today, the prize is raising, but there may be several decrease between this periods. May be, when this policy was performed in the city, every house lost it’s own character, which made the property price decreased, then the government used other methods to get it raise. At this rate, this policy may not efficiently improve the poverty values. Moreover, even if this is a reason to raise the property price, but there is also other influenced factors. Brookville, may become the politic center of the area in recent seven years, has the rapid development of economic or become a charming place for living so that many people migrate in there, that all may the causes. Therefore, the arguer does not clarify the reason of raising property price in Deerhaven Acres. In the second place, the arguer makes a false analogy. Even if the restrictions on landscaping and housepainting is the reason to raise the poverty values in Brookville, whether it is fit for Deerhaven Acres to use the same policy. There is no description of these two cities and no comparison. May be, according to the type of the city and the direction developing of the future, Deerhaven Acres is absolutely different from Brookville, therefore, if Deerhaven Acres adopts the same policy with Brookville, it may limit but not improve the development of Deerhaven Acres. In addition, even if the development and conditions of this two city are similar and the policy play an important role in the property values raising in Brookville, it would be wrong to according the decision made seven years ago to design the policy today. Seven years is a long time that everything changes, so the government should make its own plan to fit for today’s situation. In summary, the conclusion reached in this argument is invalid and not well reasoned. To make it logically acceptable, the arguer would have to demonstrate the main factors of price raising in Brookville while considering all the factors influenced the property values and time-series data of price. Additionally, the arguer must provide evidence to prove that Brookville and Deerhaven Acresthe have the same condition with each aspect of influencing the poverty values. |
