"Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
With the backdrop of culture diversity, every nation who has already formed of their particular traditional culture matches forward to modernization through economic globalization and the tight interdependence between nations. The shock promoted by the mighty expansion of modernization and the untiring defense of tradition has become national focii. Although sometimes incompatible, they are not mutually exclusive and instead coexisting harmoniously in most cases.
Above all, with no deny that modernization is the inevitable way to develop a country. Otherwise, we may still live in a stagnant society, deprive the poor fruition from past, which may be no longer applied to the changeful evrionment and the ultimate aim to promote human life. Thus, the main controversial point is what is the deserved attitude towards tradition that we should employ while already involving in the trend of modernization.
Admittedly, in certain circumstances, the fierce conflicts between the tradition and modernization cannot be eliminable. A specific example is that when the scientific notion confronts the superstitions, the latter have to abdicate its place. In some African countries, they carry on their ancient tradition ---circumcision, which serve as an importance ceremony for being adult and the honor of the family. However, scientifically speaking, because of the circumcision are processed without sanitary condition and sterilizing tools, it will easily cause infection and other disease, especially dystocia for girls. With no excuse, this harmful tradition must be abandoned, and make way for the more scientific modernization.
Nonetheless, in most instances, modernization is the heritage and development of tradition. For today, every achievement of past is tradition; and the fruition created by modernists now, as for tomorrow, is tradition as well. Thus, we cannot associate with outdated, once mentioned with tradition. Nobody can abscind the connection between tradition and modernization, otherwise modernization will suffer from losing characteristics, even self-suffocation. The Dark Medieval of Europe, for instance, is a rebellion towards tradition, and thus leads to the great damage to European culture. In history, it is easy to find that every nation or culture, no matter by foreign aggression or automatic evolution, are standing on the shoulder of past one, such as ancient Greece succeed ancient Egypt and Euphrates-Tigris civilization; Nenaissance succeed ancient Greece and Rome, then all of which provide the modernists both direct design material and creation inspiration.
Tradition and modernization do exist harmoniously in every corner of the world. In Paris, avenue des champs-elyses, whose original meaning is “paradise” ,was established to rememorize the Gretan who devoted to the culture of Aegean Civilization. Parisian use it directly as its avenue’s name and in itself embodies their respect to tradition. When you are walking through the Avenue, you can feel the coexistence of classic and modern, conciseness and luxury, noise and tranquility, nature charm and human culture. Furthermore, in personal life, one may be moved by the love letter from her boyfriend’s handwriting while being tied of the stereotyped E-mail; one can choose to ride bicycle to enjoy the fresh nature, instead of the noisy and contaminative automobile; one may fond of picking up delicate and inovative arts-crafts, rather than the standardized assemby-line products. Therefore, the tuneful combination of tradition and modernization becomes a special scenary and fuinishes more choices for contemporary.
In sum, it is unnecessary to put peoplt to such a dilemma to choose. What one should do is to take proper attitude towards tradition: wiping off the draff , adopting the elite, and then appling to modern life. |
