"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

WORDS:650           TIME: 135min          DATE: 2007-3-5

Though television, as a representative of new media, is more pictorial, interactive and maybe even informative than the books, it is hasty to conclude that reading book is not as important as it once was and people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books.

It is true that television, a great innovative media, are playing more and more important role in our life. For example, it is the main channel by which we may hear the latest news happened all over the world, of course, maybe before the age of internet. That is what a book cannot function. In addition, it is also the chief entertainment of our life, since it concludes amounts of programs of amusement, such as reality TV shows, TV play series, and the latest interactive cartoons, TV gaming shows and so on. The avalanche of information in TV, adding its well-classified professional channels, surprising color and sound, exciting interactivity, unexpectedly editing, will drag the audiences into a visual feast, while all of these, surely, cannot be achieved by the books.

However, just like the radio will never replace the newspaper, although the former seems much prompt and widespread than the latter, a newly media can hardly completely substitute an old one, for the reason that both of them have particular advantages. The information offered by a TV, although rapid and easily received, is generally more like a kind of fast-food, which is superficial and common to all, while the knowledge contained in some books appears as a regalement for one’s mentality. The insight we can gain from “The United States and China”, written by J. K. Fairbank, one of the most famous scholars of Chinese society, might exceed the impression after we watch ten or twenty documentaries about China. That is because a TV program, no matter how professional it looks, is based on those scholarly books and comprised of a series of selected content to meet the public’s taste. In fact, from TV we can only know what happened, what is the result and maybe a simple reason for it, but a reputable book, may lead us to seek what is the essence of a phenomenon, what complex social conditions determine it and what is its profound influence.

Moreover, getting information from TV is a passive process, while searching them in a book is relatively active. The schedule of TV program, as well as the content, has been set in advance. If we are looking for some ideas about “Event A”, then no one will make sure how long we have to wait for its occurrence in front of a TV, a hour, a day, a month, or even longer. Whereas, consulting it to books can be a good choice. Whenever we go to a library, type “Event A” into the search engine and enter, a long list of books will present on the screen, and then, what you need is only to copy some names you are interested in and to find them. Watching TV and reading books are just like eating food, the former is in a refectory, where you may only eat what it offers you, while the latter is to cook by yourself, using the materials you choose from a big market on your own. Apparently, the latter is more unrestricted.

In educational field, books are still mainly used to teach someone knowledge, and TV is used, if any, as just some assistant methods. That is because a book is convenient to carry and it stands for the solemn of the knowledge, while TV programs tend to maintain a colorful and entertaining characteristic. Actually, when you see a book about the studies of TV, the distinct function of books and TV will be clear that if TV can substitute books, then why such studies are published on a book, rather than on a TV.

WORDS:650(字好多啊)           TIME: 135min(时间不精确,好象不是AWP)          DATE: 2007-3-5

Though television, as arepresentative of new media, is more pictorial, interactive and maybeeven informative than the books, it is hasty to conclude that readingbook is not as important as it once was(我认为由于第2段提到了TV,book应该会有点影响,但不太大. LZ最好说明book作用会下降一点但不大.) and people can learn as much bywatching television as they can by reading books.

It is true that television,a great innovative media, are playing more and more(more and more能换成更高级点的词吗?因为评卷人会特别注意第1句) important role inour life. For example, it is the main channel by which we may hear thelatest news happened all over the world, of course, maybe before theage of internet. That is what a book cannot function. In addition, itis also the chief entertainment of our life, since it concludes amountsof programs of amusement, such as reality(live吧?) TV shows, TV play series, andthe latest interactive cartoons, TV gaming shows and so on. Theavalanche of information in TV, adding its well-classified professionalchannels, surprising color and sound, exciting interactivity, unexpectedly editing, will drag the audiences into a visual feast, while all of these, surely, cannot be achieved by the books.

(这段没看出什么问题, 让别人看看吧,我要去上课了)

Moreover, gettinginformation from TV is a passive process, while searching them(who?) in abook is relatively active. The schedule of TV program, as well as thecontent, has been set in advance. If we are looking for some ideasabout “Event A”, then no one will make sure how long we have to waitfor its occurrence in front of a TV, a hour, a day, a month, or evenlonger. Wheneverwe go to a library, type “Event A” into the search engine and enter, along list of books will present on the screen, and then, what you needis only to copy some names you are interested in and to find them(感觉不太好,因为这是library的PC化的advantage).Watching TV and reading books are just like eating food, the former isin a refectory, where you may only eat what it offers you, while thelatter is to cook by yourself, using the materials you choose from abig market on your own. Apparently, the latter is more unrestricted.

好象少个总结段...

PS:总体感觉没什么大问题,继续加油吖~
