题目:ISSUE 70 - "In any profession-business, politics, education, government-those in power should step down after five years. The surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalization through new leadership."

In present society, there is much controversy over this issue that whether a leadership should step down after five years in any profession. Some people embrace this idea wholeheartedly and claim that the surest path to success especially in business field is revitalization through new leadership. Due to different experience and conflicting values, it is hard for people to come to consensus on this issue. As far as I am concerned, however, I believe the old leader is much more advantageous than new one

Admittedly, when a leader is in a power position for a long time, indeed, he may bring a few problems. The old leader may lack enthusiasm and energy to continue to his/her job, which directly lead to an enterprise or team lack creativity. Or else, the old leader becomes an authority to be autocratic. He/she will abuse his/her power, which brings more benefit to him/her. In order to avoid these problems, some one advocate that those people in power should step down after five years. On this matter, it cannot illustrate the old leader should retire from the power position. After all, not all the old leaders will bring these problems. So many great leaders in our history do their job well for a long time; most of their job time exceeds five years, even some of them work until their death.

However, although the old leader may bring such a few problems, the old leader is still dominated in many aspects than new one. An old leader has done job for a long time, who knows the process of an enterprise's operation very well. He/she know every underling, and put them in the right position. Old leader has so many experiences to deal with the emergency. Is there any other person to make a decision more properly than the old leader? No. For example, in China, although the Chairman DengXiaoping retired from the power, the new leader often inquired his thought on some significant emergencies. Except certain causes such as health conditions, I consider that an old leader who is excellent at his/her job should not instead by a new one.

On the other hand, in many cases, the new leader may cause much more serious problems than the old one. Since the new leader is not familiar with the enterprise or his/her team's environment, he/she make mistaken decisions more easily than old one. It will take a long time for new leader to know well his/her enterprise or team. Yet, opportunities and emergencies would not wait for a new leader to become mature. The sacrifice for a new leader's growth always outweighs the vigor he/she brings to his/her job.

For an old leader should ceaselessly instill new skills and technologies into himself/herself, in order to avoid these problems I have discussed above. Through learning, the old leader can strengthen the management, create more new ideas for development, and keep pace with the whole society.

From what I have discussed above, I can draw a conclusion that those people in power should not step down after five year, and new leadership is not the key factor for an enterprise to success. Whether an old leader is suitable for the power position does not depend on the time but he/her ability.
