48"The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
I fundamentally agree with the assertion that the study of history places so much emphasis on some celebrities that overlook other ingredients to some extent. Nevertheless, the most momentous events and trends in history were decided by groups of people whose identities have long been faded from memory rather than celebrities.
First of all, we should admit that the research of history has pay attention to individuals is decided by impersonality rather than subjective factors. As Oscar Wilde says, “Anyone can make history; only great man can write it”. Although we can’t say that several famous people create history, they, as representatives of their group, play a more important and crucial role in their history than others. Without Newton, people maybe will spend a few hundred to find the universal law of gravitation and put off a few hundred to launch the first man-made earth satellite or realize the Apollo plan. Without the leadership of Abraham Lincoln, the Negro could not get rid of slave destiny and attain true liberation. Without the great wisdom of Deng Xiaoping, one country two systems, Hong Kong returned to China would not so successful. Throughout our history, instances of this sort are uncountable to be cited. Therefore the study of history begins with individuals in the group is necessary for this reason.
However, too much emphasis on celebrities could result in some negative effects. As a matter of fact, historians have been focusing their main attention on famous few elites when they study history. According to the conversation with students, most of them consider that when they open a history book or listen to history story, they can just find a few eminent or excellent people from emperors to generals and can't find the shadow of groups of common people. This inadequate aggrandizement of few elites has misled us to ignore the indispensable functions of the commonality, it seems that the human society can be created only by some few giants hands. A case in a point is that the Chairman Mao in the period of revolution in China, without the champion and uphold of commonality, Chairman Mao could never become the leader of the organization and lead the revolution to triumph. When we look into the history, we should remember that the excellent elites should not be isolated, they were always the epitomes of certain groups of people or the society of their time.
Furthermore, emphasis on the elites doesn't mean that we can ignore the crucial status of the common people. When we acquire deep know how of the history through focus research on certain significant parts, we should situate them in the framework of the group. Take one of the main leaders of American civil rights movement-Martin Luther King. Jr for example, without the support and uphold of the mass, he could not procure success. In every concrete case, the original idea may be put forward by a certain person, the ultimate success is depend on the cooperation and endeavor of civilian. Forasmuch the reasonable way is to combine the common people and the famous elites together to have a comprehensive picture of the past history.
In conclusion, we should recognize that the famous individuals interwind with the commonality to push the history forward, in addition, only both of the two sides the history are sufficient studied could the history can be clarified. |
