TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."


The speaker claims that scandals can draw our attention on problems than reformers and speakers do.I fundamentally agree with the speaker's claim,scandals can be more attractive to public than leaders.However,it has its defects itself including waste public resource and belittle reformer's prestige and so forth.

Admittedly,scandals are more attractive to people than words and speeches made by speakers and reformers.It is effective in making public be aware of problems around them,indeed,not only in politics but in many other realms of our society.The Nixon's Watergate Affair is a classic instance in political real..Without that the scandals had surfaced,public would not draw such attention on political problems of speakers and reformers.Besides,in the economic realm,a good example is the financial scandal of AA which was one of the world"Big Five" accounting companies.Thus,the problem of the economic system is well considered by the public.Another suitable example is the scandal of football corruption.So called "Black Whistle" in China,which is not made much account before.Now the "Black Whistle" has drawn increasingly attention.All these above could demonstrate that scanals have positive effect to draw public attention on the problems they seldom care normally.

However,scandals cannot make speakers and reformers who involved in them being unacceptable among public,on the contrary,scandals even can be a promotion for speakers and reformers.Consider,for example,Paul Allair,former CEO of Xerox Incorporate.During the time period from 1990-1996,when Allair hold the position of CEO he made a number of financial scandals in pursuing benefits for the corporate.After his resignation from Xerox,many other Incorporate approved his capbility in regulation and showed their will to invite Allair be the CEOs of their Incorportes at the same time.Another example is America's former president Bill Clinton,his sex scandal are known by most of people,however,no one would refute his great contribution to American and American people.

Notwithstanding the foregoing reasons why scandals can be positive.There is another side of scandal which is negative.First,when we public starring at scandals we should be careful to some fictional ones.The fictional scandals can be harmful to people involved in by belittling their prestige.Jack Kerry,the CEO of US Today can be suitable to mention here.When Jack resign from the position of  CEO of US Today he pointed out that US Today had fabricated many scandals which are unfavorable to people involved in.Secondly,we public should not care about the scandals unduely,that would not be beneficial or even harmful to us.Moreover,a multitute of public resource would be wasted.The sex scandal of Bill Clinton is a good case in point.Although Clinton is guilty in morality,it is only the privacy of a former precident.The large amount of public resources which spend on probing into intimate details of Clinton and Lewinsky are wasted by Starr.The funds would be more beneficial to our world,if it could be used in helping sick children in Africa.Or used to help address the evironmental problems and unemployment.

To sum up,I agree with the speaker that scandals can be efficacious on drawing our attention to problems of speakers and reformers which we can seldom cares in our day-to-day affairs.However,scandals as negative news inevitably has its unfavorable side.What we public should do is to be clear before scandals and do our best to avoid extremely care about scandals.Only by doing so,can scandals spark a boon for us and our society.
