ISSUE136

136. "The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare."

1.       Under what circumstances do people say they are deprived of choices?    We’re endowed with free will, however, things are also determined by the outside world. In some sense, absence of choice is common. Far from rare, it’s a common thing.  A financially-challenged student
2.       however, in many cases, choices do exist. Eg: Ludwig van Beethoven       Confucius
3.       Also, our characters, psyche and social position have also etched their line upon our actions. We do have choices but we prefer being reassured by the most satisfactory choice in our position.

"I have no choices!", too often we hear about this complain from mouths of different people. However, on reflection, we see alternatives with ease besides the so called only choice. Under what circumstances do people say they're deprived of choices? Does absence of choice so rare as the speaker asserts?
As all men are endowed with free will, one may hastly conclude that choices are always in the hands of individuals. However, the meaning of a person's life largely depends on his/her interrelationship with the society, and the people around. Our free will sometimes can hardly turn into a practice given our time, the ambience, our social and financial position. Consider a  boy fostered up in a slouch urban slam, who wishes to enter a renowned university. He has never shown predominent talent for intellect or sport that will award him with scholarships, what he has is merely a strong will. Can he achieve his dream? A high probability is that he'll not get a chance. His family can't afford. Does he have choices other than letting his dream drained? Point is that, though we have free will, reality offers enough restrains to prohibit us from free practice. Sometimes we simply stare at our destiny impotently.
Nevertheless, in many cases, alternatives do exist but tend to be ignored just because our character, psyche, and social position have already etched their line upon our actions. An A-level student may feel out of choice as an impending exam outweighs a fantastic excursion that will occupy her reviewing time. When earthquake incurs, a young mother will protect her baby under her own human body because maternal instinct tells her to do so instead of leaving the baby and running away. If we look into history, an autocrat may argue that his act of massacre is his only choice because he fears being killed by the rebellions, while in fact, it’s simply his egoism that impedes him from condoning people.
Sometimes we neglect the fact that a choice may not mean a question of being a Haverd or Yale man, of buying Ford or Toyota, of travelling to Tibet or Yunnan. For many times, one or more alternatives may not seem so satisfactory, yet they’re still choices. Before his 60s, Confucius was always expecting his theories to be adopted by some lords. It was only after he saw no hope that political ambition can be fulfilled did this great mind turn to education.
Yet Confucius’ story can tell us another thing: sometimes a seemingly degrading choice can turn out to be a wise one. Confucius never lobbied his theory successfully to his contemporary lords, however, through his education course he scored great achievement and has influenced the Chinese society for thousands of years after his decease. Choices are sure to be there when you’re ready to embrace them whether they’re satisfactory or not. Prospect outside life’s window can be as sweet as that outside life’s door, or even more so.

In some sense, absence of choice is common. Far from rare, it’s a common thing.  A financially-challenged student 2.       however, in many cases, choices do exist. We do have choices but we prefer being reassured by the most satisfactory choice in our position."I have no choices!", too often we hear about this complain from (mouths of 去掉) different people. However, on reflection, we see alternatives with ease besides the so-called ‘only choice’. Under what circumstances do people say they're deprived of choices? Does (Is) absence of choice so rare as the speaker asserts?   As all men are endowed with free will, one may hastly (hastily) conclude that choices are always in the hands of individuals. He has never shown predominent (predominant) talent for intellect or sport that will award him with scholarships, and what he has is merely a strong will. Can he achieve his dream? The result with high probability is that he'll not get a chance.

(选择的机会是由人所处的位置来定的)

Sometimes we neglect the fact that a choice may not mean a question of being a Harvard or Yale man, of buying Ford or Toyota, of travelling to Tibet or Yunnan. For many times, one or more alternatives may not seem so satisfactory, yet they’re still choices. Before his 60s, Confucius was always expecting his theories to be adopted by some lords. It was only after he saw no hope that political ambition can be fulfilled did this great mind turn to education.(孔子的例子可用来说明有时候不满意的选择并不意味着失败,但是用来论证选择是处处存在的有些牵强)
Prospect outside life’s window can be as sweet as that outside life’s door, or even more so
本文从不同的角度去理解机会是处处存在的,语言高级,句式多变。
