TOPIC: ARGUMENT14 - The following appeared in a memo from the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center, a small business serving a suburban town.
"There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring."

By citing that many consumers in our nation were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables availbale in supermarkets, and the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row, the claim for greatly expanding the variety of vegetabel seeds for gardeners this coming spring seems logical. However, careful scrutiny of the argument reveals a series of dubious assumptions, which render it quite unconvincing.
Admittedly, the consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables in supermarket, it is highly possible that there are other markets selling vegetables which might attract the customers. Moreover, there is no evidence to show if the survey can demonstrate that the custom in suburban town is also dissatisfied with the vegetables in supermakets. Therefore, it is unwarrented to get the causal link between the survey and the conclusion that people would grow vegetable themselves.
The sold out of the Great Garden fail to demonstrate that the people in suburban town is interested in growing vegetable. Some factors may also leads the magazine sold out. It is highly possible that there are little concerned about growing vegetable in the magazine, maybe the gardening is more concerned in it. Maybe the lottery and the advertisement attact the readers. This reasons below may all influence the conclusion, so we can not give the result that the customers will grow the vegetables.
Even if the people in suburban town will grow vegetables themselves, it is unwarrented to expanding the variety of vegetable seeds. We have no evidence to show that expanding the variety would increase the profits. Whereas, the increasing of variety of seeds may bring more costs. It is more profitable to expanding the number of the vegetable seeds.
In sum, the argument neither presents much evidence to show that the national survey can demonstrate that people will prefer to grow vegetables nor take some other reasons may lead to the sold out of the magazine in consideration. In addition, to strengthen the argument, we should expanding the number of seeds not to make it more variety.
