ÌâÄ¿£ºARGUMENT65 - Thefollowing appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese storeslocated throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in ourchain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Lastyear, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were alldomestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey byCheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domesticcheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses bylimiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is todiscontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrateprimarily on domestic cheeses."

The argument concludes that the profitswill improve by discontinue stocking imported cheese and concentratingprimarily on domestic cheeses. In order to support his conclusion, the authorpoints that five best-selling cheeses in newest store were all domestic cheddarcheese form Wisconsin last year. The author also cites that a survey conductedby Cheese of the World magazine shows increasing preference for domesticcheeses among its subscribers. At first glance the argument seems reasonable,yet close scrutiny reveals some fallacies which render it unconvincing.

To begin with, the mere fact that fivebest-selling cheeses at newest stores were all domestic cheeses providesnothing to the popularity of domestic cheeses. Last year may be an aberration,and then the sales of domestic cheeses are very poor in other years. Good salesmay be responsible for their promotion measures on domestic cheeses such as lowprices which are irrespective of preference among the customers.

In the second place, the author'sconclusion about the increasing preference for domestic cheeses depends on thatthe assumption is reliable. Yet the author offers no evidence to substantiateit. The organizer in the survey is Cheese of the World magazine which is not aspecial research institute, and no information is offered about whether thesurvey methods are scientific or not. Besides, subscribers prefer domesticcheeses do not necessarily mean they will buy the domestic cheeses. Perhapsthey want to learn how to make the cheese by themselves. Or perhaps, they justappreciate the beautiful pictures.

Last but not least, the author also makessome other logic mistakes. First, the author assumes that stocking importedcheeses and domestic cheeses are mutually exclusive alternatives. Yet, thismight not be the case. It is entirely possible that the combination of twocheeses will play a more effective role in profiting. Second, the authorhastily concludes that the foregoing measures are the best way to improveprofits. Without comparing with some other measures, it is unconvincing for meto accept this method is best. Besides, profit is a function of revenue andcost. Lacking evidence to prove the increase revenue and decline cost, theauthor cannot draw the conclusion that the concentration on domestic cheeseswill be profitable.

In all, the argument is unpersuasive as itstands. In order to strengthen the argument, the author should provide clearevidences that last year's situation is a normal phenomenon and the survey isreliable. The author should also supply evidence that stocking imported cheeseand domestic cheese is exclusive and such measures will be profitable withstatistic on revenue and cost.
