The speaker concluded that if the goal is worthy, which is difficult to be defined, then any means to achieve this goal is justifiable. In my view, the assertion is extreme and unconvincing。Even if the goal is worthy, the means also should be assessed, weather is it justifiable or damaged other’s profits. To prove the point, again we need only look for substantiation to country, society, and the individuals.
First of all, how to define “worthy”? How worthwhile and valuable a goal is lies not only in the subjective meditation and evaluation of an individual, we must consider the interactive influence exerted by this goal on others. If the goal is protect human beings’ benefits, is it must worthy? If the goal is content individual desire ,is it must unworthy? Who can give a correct and universal acknowledgeable definition of “worthy”? Nobody. There is only one thing we can definite ——we need to look for a bit more balance between goal and means.
In terms of a country, what is it the most important goal? No doubt its aim is to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. However, sometimes protecting a nation’s sovereignty will depend on hegemony and cheat. For example the political doctrine of Machiavelli, which denies the relevance of morality in political affairs and holds that craft and deceit are justified in pursuing and maintaining political power. Nevertheless, history has proved that any one who seeks hegemony and deceit allies, whether global or regional, will go against his own will and come to no good end. With the development of globalization and the interdependence of states, there is no country could existence just though sacrifice other’s interests . Like British and France in the Second World War take an appeasement or pacification policy in order to protected the pioneer from attack which would only aggravate the hidden dangers grow into genocide and global war.
As far as a society, may consider the goal of achieving stability and well being of its citizens to be worthwhile. But it is unworthy at the expense of liberty, equality and fraternity. In the medieval Europe, religiondominated people’s lives, the society is stability ,no one have courage to break the Holiness, Mary Clarence, as a result , people lived in a dark period without freedom, without rights, even without thoughts. In a word, since no goal is set from a pure disinterested, impartial perspective, it is necessary to bear the interwoven relationship in mind before targeting at a certain goal.
At last, in terms of individuals, we also can’t overlook the methods he or she through to success, just pay attention to the goal is dangerous. self-fulfilling:and success is everyone’s life destination, yet someone lost himself on the road just because of lack of conscious and moral rules. We admit that everyone want to get honor and worth, but no one could win truly respect from others without noble moral spirits and comply with the law. I remember Kanto once said “Conscience is an instinct to judge us in the light of moral laws. It is not a mere faculty; it is an instinct. ”
In conclusion, the assertion that goal is worthy then any means to achieve this goal is justifiable is extreme and unconvincing. Even if the goal is worthy, the means also should be assessed, weather is it justifiable or damaged other’s profits. We need to look for a bit more balance between goal and means. Only through this way could we expect our international relationship in pace and our society keep thrive and not only do I think it's possible to succeed while maintaining ethical standards, I think it's the only way
