我对申请urban planning的一点点想法

这些天正在选校，其实urban planning不是我的主要申请方向，但也是申请的一部分。选了几天校，有一点心得跟大家分享一下吧：

+ j* b" l+ _' z+ v1、大多数学校的urban and regional planning对master的申请者没有什么背景要求，欢迎不同专业的学生。无论是学校的网页还是小米的回复基本上都是这样的。除了少部分学校之外，也不要求申请者提交作品集。

Our program is a "first professional degree" program. We do not assume a prior background in planning, or any specific prerequisites other than good grades. Our students come from a wide variety of undergraduate fields and degrees. While a few have had work experience in planning offices, the majority have not.

) K, r9 K1 ]% @2、虽然都叫这个专业名称，不同学校的专业设置有所差别，我总结了一下大致有三类不同的侧重点：public policy, geography, architecture.大家在查学校的时候根据自己的喜好选择不同类型。院系设置参照：

% V) {6 D* L, z* l5 S0 B/ i3、这个专业的带奖学金的申请deadline相比其他专业比较早，而且奖学金的数额相对较少，拿奖的机会也很少，这可能跟入学的条件宽松有关，估计比较喜欢发AD

ots of people looking for information about planning school. Which universit
ies offer planning programs? Which are the best schools? Which schools allow

While we always tried to point people in the right direction, we felt that t
# ~: S$ [1 s/ L. j" M) phere was a general lack of information about graduate study in urban plannin
g - and particularly absent was an overall comparison of different urban pla
. |: ~  L4 Q$ v& E7 _1 Jnning programs around the nation. By the Fall of 2005, when our former manag
ing editor (and current planning student), David Gest, was applying to gradu
, R  a* F5 n5 f( o: ?2 ~- Sate school, we decided to develop an informative resource for perspective pl
anning students.

The result is the Planetizen 2007 Guide to Graduate Urban Planning Programs
7 J7 x& m( p5 M-- the first independent guide and ranking of graduate urban planning progra
ms. This inaugural edition features a list of the top 25 graduate urban plan
" l' f$ T* A& H! z/ pning programs. The Guide also contains a directory of 94 graduate planning p
rograms in the U.S. and Canada, including detailed information for 45 school
: D2 t6 B. T( _4 es that responded to a detailed questionnaire.

While we think a list of the top planning schools was long overdue, we're mo
st excited about being able to publish a list of the top schools in each of
12 different specialty areas. With many new planning students interested in
( U: d$ W2 }4 R) y6 t3 A* bparticular areas of the field -- such as transportation or historic preserva
tion -- we believe this will be of the most benefit to students who are seri
ous about pursuing an educational program that most closely matches their in
terests. And since many students want to consider the best schools in their
area, we've included a list of the top schools in each region of the country

educators and students -- along with the schools themselves -- to gather in
formation about what makes a good planning school, and find out schools whic

Topping the list of the best graduate urban planning programs is the School
- P0 H) s' v( b4 I' oof Architecture and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in
) _9 Z/ m0 R* b2 z' O3 O Cambridge, Massachusetts. The school's graduate planning program, which is
one of the oldest and largest in the country, draws students from around the
, @  ^# M* P/ d# W; w globe to study issues from transportation to housing development. Rounding
out the top three are the University of California, Berkeley, and the Univer
sity of North Carolina, Chapel Hill -- both public institutions often recogn
ized for their educational excellence.

e planning community who told us that ranking schools was an inexact science

sed only upon their reputation. While we certainly acknowledge the danger of
placing too much importance on the reputation of a university, in the end,
we decided that information was a useful measure for prospective students to
consider as one part of their decision making process. (Interestingly, duri
ng our survey process, educators, professionals and students all considered
a school's reputation as one of the most valuable measures for evaluating a
school.)
