The following is taken from an advertisement placed in a weekly business magazine by the Dickens Academy.
'We distributed a survey to senior management at International Mega-Publishing, Inc. The result of the survey clearly indicates that many employees were well prepared in business knowledge and computer skills, but lacked interpersonal skills to interact gracefully with customers. International Mega-Publishing decided to improve customer satisfaction by sending their newly hired employees to our one-day seminars. Since taking advantage of our program, International Mega-Publishing has seen a sharp increase in sales, an indication that the number of their disgruntled customers has declined significantly. Your company should hire Dickens and let us turn every employee into an ambassador for your company.'

------正文------
The arguer concludes that other company should hire Dickens and let them train every employee to be an ambassador for their company. In order to support his argument, the arguer cites a survey and presents the result of their program. Careful scrutiny of the argument, however, reveals it lends incredible support to the conclusion with several logical flaws.
To begin with, we find no sign of such procedure for random sampling and think the survey is not representative enough to reflect the common situation. For this survey is distributed by the Dickens Academy itself, it is entirely possible that Dickens Academy make the results they desire, which make the survey lack of credibility. Further, even the procedure of the survey is fair, however, whether the samples are selected random is still unclear. Perhaps the survey is distributed among the employees who take charge in information in computer rather than interacting with customers. Lacking such evidence, the representative of the survey is open to doubt.
Secondly, the author fails to establish a causal relationship between the facts that attending program and a sharp increase in sales. The attending of the program and the increasing sales only has a time relationship according to the information given in the advertisement. Perhaps the sharp increase is caused by the high quality of their products recently. Or the products just reach the modern fashion properly. In addition, the attendants of the program are all newly hired employees who may not have the chance to interact with their customers right now. The mere fact that the attendance of the program has no relationship with the increasing sales at least.
Finally, the conclusion is based on a false analogy resulting in itself unconvincing.
Without the comparison between the International Mega-Publishing and other companies, we have enough reason to doubt whether the cause of success in International Mega-Publishing will result in the same in other companies. Perhaps other companies need not to interact with consumers so much as International Mega-Publishing. Thus, the whole conclusion is based on a false analogy.
In sum, much more information need to be presented to make the survey convincing. Moreover, lacking of ruling out other factors may also cause a increasing sale, the logical deduction can not be credible. Meanwhile, to better assess this advertisement, it is rather necessary to compare between International Mega-Publishing and other companies in many aspects.
