36"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."

Recently, there is much debate on choosing the right people to decide the greatness of individuals. Some scholars advocate critics who live after those individuals are the only proper group to accomplish the mission, while the others adhere that the very people who can comment exactly should be their contemporaries. In my point of view, critics hold different kinds of criterion for the gap causing by the span of time on one hand, most people living in the same era could be limited by selfishness, value, and information on the other hand. So we should accept the opinion of all those people as a reference, then, some combination of those opinions could be the closest one to the very truth.
Admitted, it is taken for granted that the critics from offspring are less impersonal and more comprehensive. As a recent survey conducted by sociality department of Peking University, sixty seven point four percent of students agree that to conduct impersonal commentary is far from an easy mission, the result of survey also reveals that comprehensive decisions are more difficult to reach advocated by seventy six point five percent interviewees. Then, a researcher from campus uncovers the secret of the phenomena, (and I paraphrase) “The medium’s impact is enormous which adds great burden to a partial decision. The question is how much useful information we may handle, although the boundless internet has already helped us a lot in collecting information” On the contrary, few channels will pay attention to the historic problem of how to comment the greatness of individuals in history, thus fair conclusion is easier to arrive at for the advantage of this point. Further more, contrary to the large but tedious information those contemporaries may receive, the datum offspring can get is less but much more than useful, since the tedious ones, obviously, can not exist in the test of time. So, from this angle, the position of those scholars does have strong support.
However, compare with advantage, the impersonality and comprehensiveness, of offspring, contemporaries’ comments have their unique predominance. Time barrier is impossible to be penetrated deemed by Einstein, which means returning to past is, definitely, a mission impossible. With certain circumstance, particular thought, conducts, and words could be understood with no barricades, but how about without the particular condition? Even though, stories can be described or recorded precisely, how about the thought in people’s mind at that exact time. So these problems are quite difficult for offspring critics to overcome but are gifts to contemporary critics.
Last but not least, the values and experiences in different eras, even nations, are not quite same. The reason is obviously as same as that citizen of different nations may hold several kinds of perspectives on one issue, thus an overall comment should be taken in deciding the greatness of individuals. A-bomb invented by Einstein, for instance, which is a disaster for Japanese, thus the commentary for Einstein should be different at that particular time between American and Japanese. Further more Einstein is respected by the world as a great scientist. As is known to all, Van Gogh’s works failed to find an appreciative audience during his lifetime, and the burning eyes of this Self-Portrait are an example of how 19th-century Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh attempted to capture the human essence and emotions of his subjects, however, his paintings’ popularity rose steadily during the 20th century. These two examples may be too simple, but there is something profound in it. We may reach the conclusion after pounding the question of why Van Gogh’s priceless work can not appreciate when he is alive, and why people in different nation may not arrive at the same conclusion on some issues. And the answer is what I advocate above.
In sum, it is very likely that people may not reach the same conclusion on this controversial issue due to their different experiences and values. Nevertheless, public awareness of the various dimensions of choosing the right people to decide the greatness of individual will certainly contribute to my conclusion that an overall perspective of taking all kinds of comment, then to conclude is probably the most suitable way.
