TOPIC: ISSUE154 - "Both parents and communities must be involved in the local schools. Education is too important to leave solely to a group of professional educators."
WORDS: 672          TIME: 0:45:00          DATE: 2006-4-15

Should parents and communities involved in the local schools? According to what the speaker claims, parents and the society are both responsible for the education. In my view the speaker unfairly generalizes. Although it might be tempting to agree with the speaker on the basis that people will be affected by people around them and the society as a whole. However, the speaker overlooks that even if parents and communities are involved in education, when it comes to some disciplines such as science and art, they might be of few use.

The implicit rationale behind the speaker's contention seems to be that people's moral standards are mainly decided by the society rather than professors in college or school. Rousseau, a French philosopher held that humanity is essentially good but corrupted with the society. Coincidently, Confucius, an ancient Chinese philosopher also pointed out this same opinion in his great work 2,000 years ago. According to their theory, people will become guileless and benevolent if they have grown up in a society or community with less crime and violence. For this reason, communities and parents should participate in the education of their next generation, if they intend to make them better, in morality at least.

In addition, it might also be tempting to agree with the speaker on the basis that people's behavior is affected by the society as a whole instead of a small group of educators. The individuals should adapt themselves into social life with other people, and moreover, they should conform their behavior to accord with social moral principles and customs. For instance, a joke that makes Americans cannot stop laughing might be considered as boring by Germany; and people in India are used to talking with friends closely while Englishmen like to keep a certain distance when they are talking. Apparently, culture diversity as well as social variety plays a vital role in human behavior, and furthermore, different societies require different human conducts suitable. Since people's behavior would finally decide the destiny of the society, it might be necessary that the society as a whole should be involved in the education.

On the other hand is a compelling argument against the speaker's assertion: when the education comes to human endeavors such as science and art, parents and communities might be useless to the development of their children. In the realm of science, many theories and techniques might be too specialized to be all understood by parents. Thus professors in college and schools might be useful and proper. For example, according to the apprise from Stephen Hawking, Einstein Albert's special and regular theories that revolutionized the modern thought on the nature of the time and space could not be fully comprehended by 12 people at the same time in the world. Thus even if parents participate in the education of their sons or daughters, it might be useless.

Moreover, in the realm of art, the argument also could find ample concrete evidence: is it possible that parents could appreciate both Van Gogh's painting and Emily Dickinson's poems? Is it possible that parents could understand the profound meaning in sculptures of Rodin such as the Kiss and the Thinker and historical events masked in Homer's great works, Iliad and Odyssey at same time? Is it possible that parents could simultaneously and fully understand grim metaphors of human violence and greed in David Smith's abstract metal sculptures such as Royal Bird and Mozart's great work? In my view, it might be of little odds because of the variety and individuality of these great individuals. Take Van Gogh and Dickinson for example, to fully understand what is behind Van Gogh's paintings and Dickinson's poems might cost an expert in impressionism or literature separately many years, therefore parents could not help their children when problems are involved knowledge beyond their professions.

In the final analysis, the contention is fundamentally correct, especially when the education is connected with morality and behavior. Nevertheless, in my view the speaker's claim might be open to groundless when it comes to education of science and art.
