NO.147 现代化与传统
"Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."

  a).传统知识是现代文明的基石。
  b).现代文明是传统的扩展或另一种表现方式。
  c).传统可以和现代文明和谐相处的例子。

4.总结。

The speaker asserts that we must choose between tradition and modernization because they are not compatible. I agree insofar as in certain cases there are some conflicts between them and therefore the two are mutually exclusive. However, in most cases, they're complementary so that the two could help each other to progress.

Admittedly, tradition is mainly relative to customs, beliefs and old ways of life, while modernization refers mostly  to industrialization, science and technology. So it's  inevitable  that tradition has fallen behind sometimes and it should give way to modernization.  For example, in the past, people send message to their friends in the distance mainly by letters. Nowadays, various ways of communication such as e-mail, msn, and mobile phone have sprung up to take the place of letters in most cases. It is also hard to imagine what the society would be like if we still live by farming and hunting, women behave as attachments to men, and people have blind faith in superstition yet.

However, for the most part, tradition and modernization should rely on each other to progress. For one thing, the tradition serves as an indispensable foundation for modernization. Most of the traditional knowledge we inherit from our predecessors are still helpful when applied to current situations. For instance,  although Arabic numerals first appeared two thousands years ago, it is still in use in people’s daily lives and science research. In short, without the nutrition from traditional soil, the flower of modernization will never blossom out as we enjoy today.

For another, so-called modernization nowadays is actually an extension or new display of tradition. This is especially true for our festivals and culture. An apt illustration involves Olympic Games, which was first held at Olympia in ancient Greece for honoring the Greek god Zeus. Modern Olympics, standing for peace and friendship,  has become the most important activity for people all over the world due to the modern transport and communication technique. In this view, modernization plays an important role in tradition's development and prosperity.

Moreover, in many cases tradition can live in harmony with modernization. Let’s look at some famous cities such as Paris and Peking, old buildings belonging to royalty in the past make the cities more attractive for tourists. Also the popular songs with classical elements are preferred to youngsters nowadays.

In sum, tradition and modernization are enemies like water and fire sometimes. But in most cases they're friends and could help each other to progress. Hence, we can't only choose one between them.

The speaker asserts that we must choose between tradition and modernization because they are not compatible. I agree insofar as in certain cases(???) there are some conflicts between them and therefore the two are mutually exclusive.

For example, in the past, people send message(messages) to their friends in the distance mainly by letters. Nowadays, various ways of communication such as e-mail, msn, and mobile phone have sprung up to take the place of letters in most cases(我觉得最好把这些情况列举几个出来,包括前面的sometimes). It is also hard to imagine what the society would be like if we still live by farming and hunting, women behave as attachments to men, and people have blind faith in superstition yet.(这句话和这段主题好象不太搭耶

Modern Olympics, standing for peace and friendship,  has become(became?) the most important activity for people all over the world due to(能不能用because of ??) the modern transport and communication technique. In this view, modernization plays an important role in tradition's development and prosperity.

Moreover, in many cases tradition can live in harmony with modernization. Let’s look at some famous cities such as Paris and Peking, old buildings belonging to royalty in the past make the cities more attractive for tourists(去掉好点,对巴黎、北京人自己也可以有attractive嘛. Also the popular songs with classical elements are preferred to youngsters nowadays.(这个有点突然了吧?)

In sum, tradition and modernization are enemies like water and fire sometimes. But in most cases they're friends and could help each other to progress. Hence, we can't only choose one between them.
