In this issue, the author states that in the countries where people speak lesser known languages, the governments should take measures to prevent the extinction of these languages. I agree with the author. As far as I am concerned, languages is the token of a culture, thus each other should spend no efforts in maintaining them intact even in the current situation that unification of languages seems to be the trend.

To begin with, preventing the languages from becoming extinct is in nature the preservation of culture.

First of all, language is commonly the very initiative impression a culture can have on foreigners from other cultures since it is the tool people use to communicate with each other. To some extent, languages can reflect the essence of different cultures. For example, French is gently and elegantly pronounced like French people behave; German is extremely strict in grammar, which also mirror the style of how Germany executed their tasks; Chinese is indirect and connotative, which symbolize the pith of Chinese culture. Clearly, languages as the basic communicative tool, is shaped by how people act and think in a certain culture. Therefore, language is the emblem of a culture.

Second of all, language as a media of the expression of other cultural forms is indispensable in preserving a culture. Many other cultural exhibitions will be nearly impossible to exist without language. For instance, the Xiang-opera in china is a specific opera that are performed in the local slang-Hunan language. However, such special cultural genre would not exist if the Hunan slang became extinct. Tibetan ballads can be a cogent example as well. This unique art-form is expressed in Tibetan language-a rarely spoken slang now. Once, the language die out, the precious art-genre would sequentially extinct. Meanwhile, even some of the lesser known languages are not being lost at present, since fewer and fewer people are speaking it, the cultures which they represent will inevitably be in oblivion and eventually disappear. The diversity of cultures on earth will be gradually falling down.

Therefore, Governments have to take positive measures the preserving languages for the purpose of protecting the according cultures from extinction.

Although someone may claim that the current trend is the unification of languages, obviating the language barriers thus booting the communications. I concede such trend is the main stream no one is able to overturn. Nevertheless, I don’t find the unification and the preservation of rarely-spoken languages mutually exclusive. For one thing, to obviate the communication barrier, people in different countries only need to know one or two prevailingly used languages such as English and Spanish. We are not necessarily obliged to desert another language. As a matter of fact, a large amount of people nowadays are multi-lingual. For another, forsaking using a lesser known language can not enable one to master another language. In order to popularize a commonly used language, governments need to create the environments of speaking this language, such as setting up according courses in curriculum in school, or increasing the reciprocations of people in other countries. Many European countries set a great example of grasping the usage of English while preserving their own languages. To summarize, unification of languages does not equal only speak one or two major language and for the purpose of eliminating language block, governments need to create atmosphere for study and promote communication between countries instead of deserting the using of their own languages.

In conclusion, the governments is ought to preserve lesser know languages, otherwise, their cultures may be exposed in the danger of extinction. Though the current mainstream is to remove language barrier between counties, it does not conflict with the preservation of rarely-spoken languages because they are not mutually exclusive.
