TOPIC: ISSUE31 - "Money spent on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial."
WORDS: 764 TIME: 00:45:00+10:00 DATE: 2007-7-27 19:28:20
In this issue, the author states that any research including the results of those are controversial is worth investing. I agree with the author insofar as the researches that concern the critical improvements in science and technology are always worth investing regardless of their results, otherwise, those researches relating trivially to any breakthroughs should give way to other issues.
To begin with, to discontinue and cast doubts on the investments of the researches once they are found controversial is unwise and irresponsible. As a matter of fact, as science and technology has been extremely advanced than before, it is nearly impossible to build any milestones with the promise of causing no controversies. Man kind has explored increasingly tremendous power and methods to utilize such as nuclear energy, genetic modification, computer technology and so forth. These advanced technologies bring lots of benefits to human society as well as many potential hazards along. For example, the nuclear energy offer exhausting resources for human beings while enable the nuclear war which could destroy the entire planet possible; the genetic modification though is exceedingly promising in curing deadly diseases and producing endless foods to solve poverty problems; the computer technology make the globe a small village by shortening the distance of people in different places and facilitate the development of other fields with its incredible calculating and programming ability, yet it is also the source of many cyber crimes, which can paralyze the operation of a country. It is clear that any strengthful power as the science and technology soars will inevitably bring the benefits as well as potential hazards. However, people can not dismiss using these powers merely because their downsides, or human society can hardly move forward. Imaging without nuclear energy, the other alternative resources to produce energy like oil, wood, coal will be utterly explored whereas the total energy they are able to generate is quite limited. Then human beings will be mired in the nightmare of running out powers, thus the world may stop operating; Imaging without gene-technology, we are never be able to find a viable cure for the deadly diseases like cancer, AIDS, and etc. We may be harassed by these maladies for ever. Moreover, those for suffers from them has to experience the awful pains and then die; Imaging without computer science, information will be not exchanged as the present pace, also people are not able to calculate data in huge volume. Thereby, the progress of all the society will enormously slow down. From what we have discussed, we can readily conclude that we can not discontinue investing these critical researches even though their results may bring some controversies because our society needs these powerful drives to head forward.
However, as to the researches those are not closely tied with the development of the whole society money spend on them are not good investment at all and these research should give priority to other issues pending to be solved like poverty, famine, epidemic disease and etc. From the humanitarian perspective, the poverty, famine and disease issues always precede other regular researches. Consider millions of people in many places in the world suffer from misery and exposure while funds are spend on the researches which are about what material is better for the plastic surgery. Consider countless die from huger daily and watch their children infected by fatal disease, waiting for death while a incredibly large amount of resources and money are invested on the researches searching for other intellectual creatures like human in space. How can we let those unnecessary researches fly in the face of the indispensable social issue requiring urgent solutions? From the social perspective, to solve the poverty, famine and the like social issues is to maintain the stability of the society. Almost every social rebellion originated from the dissatisfaction and anger. And the discontent and rage can easily be aroused if people are not able to survive and experiencing pains. Even it is difficult nowadays to initiate an official upheaval, hatred and conflicts can generate among people, thus the stability of the society may be in danger. To summarize, money should be more worthy spending on the critical social issues like poverty, famine, epidemic diseases comparing to the unessential researches.
In conclusion, I am in favor of that money should be invested on the critical researches no matter their results are controversial or not since mostly these researches bring the ultimate drive for the entire society to advance. Nevertheless, the unnecessary researches do not deserve the money when many other serious social issues call for urgent solutions.
