In this issue, the author states that the understanding of the past can hardly provide guidance for present living since so much is new and complex today. I agree with the author insofar as the modern life is fraught with complexity and new things when it comes to the realm where advanced sciences and technology are involved. However, in many other fields which are not closely related to advanced science and technology, an understanding of the past indeed guide our present living.

To begin with, I concede with the soaring of modern science and technology our lives are much more advanced comparing to that in the past. Many easy operations or daily routines are exceeding complicated for people living in the past, or most newly-appeared products are beyond their wildest imagination, thus an understanding of the old times may not be helpful at all to guide present living. For example, computer has already been one of the most commonly-used appliances. People use computer to write articles, to calculate statistics, to play games, to surf the internetand etc. Yet, none of these had been experienced by people before the advent of computer. When we had problems in computer crashes, coping with electricviruses or software errors, it is impossible to ask for guidance in the past. Meanwhile, when we had some other issues centered on computers such as whethergovernments should block certain information in internet for their citizens, or how to reduce cyber violence and porn, the past can neither provide little guidance for those issues.  In sum, the advents of many modern products bring along many unprecedented problems, the past can barely guide people living today to deal with them.

However, there are many other components in present living which may remain unchanged or are slightly changed during the past hundreds of years. They can be mirrored in the history. Thereby the understanding of their past analogs can possibly be helpful to guide presentliving. To support this point, we should look no further than the scenarios in our daily lives. Almost everyone no matter which time s/he live will feel depressed when confronting frustrations, greedy when being tempted, furious when getting angry. Those reactions are rooted in the nature of human beings and happening everyday in our daily lives. And those negative moods may cause unhappiness or sin since they impede people from living positively.Nevertheless, people are able to reach out to the past for guidance to avoid these untoward moods. For instance, people living today can read encouraging literatures written before to cheer them up, or even seek out the concrete approaches to move on like going hiking or seeing ocean which their precedents might have done. To summarize, the past and the present can overlap in many components in life, therefore, the similar occurrences in the past may provideguidance for their present analogs.

Moreover, there are also some issues in which times are not taken into accounts. Under such circumstances, the past are the present are an organic whole and looking in history for guidance isnecessary. Philosophy is an issue in point. For thousands of years, people have been pondering the nature of the world, the end of life, the origin of the universe. Yet, none of these have been conclude with definite answers in the field of philosophy. The only products formed in such a long period are different schools holding diverse perspectives. No matter Spiritualism or Materialism, people consider the world mentally without any exterior assistance.Time may enable those problems hoary on the surface but intact in nature.People today still wondering the answerless issues and the theory of those great philosophers in history are still indispensable when people search any references. Hence, for the issues which are beyond times and spaces, looking for guidance in past is just the necessary procedure to access to them.

In conclusion, the modern living is becoming more advanced and complex considering fresh components are added in itdaily. Howbeit, we can not ignore a large chunk of commonly possessed partst hat both the past and present living have. History can provide guidance whenit comes to these issues. Moreover, there are some issues which are eternal,the alterations of eras may hardly affected them, the past are the part and parcel of the understanding of them, thus people today are oblige to ask forguidance in the past if they want to access to them.
