题目:ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

---------------------------------------------
In this argument, the author concludes that it's necessary to discontinue stocking many varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses to improve profits, for the reason that the best-selling cheeses at their newest stores are all domestic cheddar cheeses from Winconsin(W). Besides, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine also shows an incresing preference for domestic cheeses. However, this argument contains several facets that are questionable.
First of all, best-selling doesn't have an absolute relationship with high profits. There're a variety of ways for the company and the stores to promote cheese's selling. For example, the stores can make it a lower price to promote the selling of domestic cheese. And it's not a long-term sales strategy to continue making promoting selling. Another doubted point is that the author doesn't provide us with the location of the newest stores, perhaps they're near W so that it's possible to save some costs on transport. Besides, the mentioned stores are all newly opened, which makes the result specialized.
Secondly, the survey conducted by the Cheeses of the World magazine cannot be taken seriously. Since it's just a magazine of Cheeses, it may not have a large number of readers like the Times as well as newspapers. It's very much possible that most people who're buying imported cheeses do not even heard about the magazine so that they don't have a chance to participate in the survey. Another possibility is that it's a magazine for specialists on Cheeses, in this way, they may have a preference on domestic cheeses than the imported ones.
Thirdly, if the company ceased in selling imported cheeses, on one hand, it may reduce the expenses by limiting inventory, on the other hand, it's of great possibility that it'll result in the dissatisfaction of most of the imported cheeses consumers. Thus, directly discontinue stocking varieties of imported cheese may risk a lot.
At length, the conclusion that the author suggests lacks of credibility. Regardless of who the author is, he/she has chosen to ignore many important aspects that would make the company risk losing many of its old consumers. So to make conclusion more reliable, the author should do more investigation and five more evidences about the above-mentioned possibilities. |
