40. Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem.

As the speaker asserts, scholars and researches will be better off if scholars concentrate on their individual interests rather than the contribution to the larger society. However, I do agree with this statement insofar that scholars should be more concerned with their interest, but an over emphasis on individual interest may sometimes have negative effects.

In the first place, whether a research will benefit the larger society is hard to be determined, and the over emphasis on the foreseen contributions will possibly undermine many researches which with potential benefit to the well-being of society and to discovering the very truth of natural world. How can we evaluate the contribution of a research to the larger society? This may be a question that worth thinking by any one who care about the relationship between science and the progress of civilization, but few of whom could have a perfect answer. Indeed, many of the scientific researches will be contributing the society in such a long period of time from now, which make us unable to predict the contributions. Just as the case that how can we judge the strength of a great man when he was only an infant baby? During in debut of the first car in the world, people laughed at that funny staff because it ran even slower than a carriage. After the advent of the first modern computer, some experts believed that it is useless due to its tremendous cost and weak calculating ability. But just take a look around the world we are living today. Modern transport make the earth much smaller than ever, and enable us to go to almost everywhere in the world. Modern science of communication supported by powerful computers network make all kinds of information we need so freely available, and take the progress of science into the speedy highway. All this significant convenience and facilities are made by the inventions used to be judged useless. Thus if we put too much emphasis on the contributions of research achievements to the current society, we would be repeating the mistakes of our ancestors.

In the second place, the individual interests will be the best motivation and courage of the scholars in their researches. Complex, difficult, and even dangerous as the scientific researches are, I cannot imagine how scientists could carry out their researches without a strong interest in the subject. The interest in the question and the curiosity to the answer will make the scholars much more positive in studying the extant theories and trying to find the way to the unknown truth. And their interest, acts as an impetus, may even make them more content about what they are studying, and turn the somewhat bald and difficult researches into joyful happiness.

Admittedly, if we lend too much reliance and put too much emphasis on individual interest of scholars, some of the researches may have deleterious consequences to the society. For example the research of clone technology on human body, if is processed, will be a great challenge to the ethical system of the entire mankind. The clone people could be “produced” in use of human-body experiments, underground trade of human organs, or even for some other more immoral purposes. Although this kind of study meets some scientists’ interest, it should not be allowed to proceed.

To sum up, rather than the contribution to the larger society, scholars should concentrate on their individual interests in their researches, which will encourage them when facing difficulties. However, people should try to limit their interests, by means of law and principle of science study, otherwise, the researches may harm others, ultimately the society.

As the speaker asserts, scholars and researches [researchers] will be better off if scholars concentrate on their individual interests rather than the contribution to the larger society. However, I do agree with this statement insofar [这是个adv.不是perp.,这里缺conj.] that scholars should be more concerned with their interest, but an over emphasis on individual interest may sometimes have negative effects.

In the first place, whether a research will benefit the larger society is hard to be determined, and the over emphasis on the foreseen [是不是换成假设的或者想象中的要好一点,预见的是不是比较肯定以后会有贡献] contributions will possibly undermine many researches which [are] with potential benefit to the well-being [不要连字符吧?] of society and to discovering the very truth of natural world. How can we evaluate the contribution of a research to the larger society This may be a question that [加上is或者去掉that] worth thinking by any one who care [cares] about the relationship between science and the progress of civilization, but few of whom [如果这样用,我想前面的any one应该换成those,不然few无从说起] could have a perfect answer. Indeed, many of the scientific researches will be contributing [will have been contributing to] the society in such a long period of time from now, which make [makes] us unable to predict the [their] contributions. 我不确定] Just as the case that how can we judge the strength of a great man when he was only an infant baby [infant和baby去掉一个,或者换成in infancy]? During in [?多了一个?][the] debut of the first car in the world, people laughed at that funny staff [汗ing… 没看懂] because it ran even slower than a carriage [really?]. After the advent of the first modern computer, some experts believed that it is [was] useless due to its tremendous cost and weak calculating ability [这个…… . But just take a look around the world we are living [in] today. Modern transport [做交通工具时应该是可数的,用复数] make the earth much smaller than ever, and enable us to go to [去掉to] almost everywhere in the world. Modern science of communication supported by powerful computers network make makes all kinds of information we need so freely available, and take takes the progress of science into the speedy highway. All all this?  this significant convenience and facilities are made by the inventions used to be judged useless. Thus if we put too much emphasis on [用了3遍了,试试看换动词说法underline/accentuate] the contributions of research achievements to the current society, we would be repeating the mistakes of our ancestors.

In the second place, the individual interests will be the best motivation and courage [encouragement. Courage是勇气,encourage才是鼓励] of the scholars in their researches. And their interest, acts [act] as an impetus, may even make them more content about what they are studying, and turn the somewhat bald and difficult [把the后面的定语后置] researches into joyful happiness.

Admittedly, if we lend too much reliance and put too much emphasis on [又来了,呵呵] individual interest of scholars, some of the researches may have deleterious consequences to the society [感觉因果说不通,应当有个中间衔接:过分强调兴趣—>学者们毫无顾忌的进行研究—>研究结果对社会有害。 For example the research of clone technology on human body, if is processed, will be a great challenge to the ethical system of the entire mankind. The clone people could be [太绝对了。 “produced” in use of human-body experiments, underground trade of human organs, or even for some other more immoral purposes. Although this kind of study meets some scientists’ interest, it should not be allowed to proceed.

To sum up, rather than the contribution to the larger society, scholars should concentrate on their individual interests in their researches, which will encourage them when facing difficulties. However, people should try to limit their interests, by means of law and principle of science study, otherwise, the researches may harm others, [and] ultimately the society.
