Issue 46 while some leaders in government, sport, industry and other areas attribute their success to a well-developed sense of competition, a society can better prepare its young people for leadership by instilling in them a sense of cooperation.

Certainly it is true that modern society has laid so much emphasis on competition that most people seriously ignore the role of cooperation. In the nature of it, cooperation does not necessarily incongruous with competition and in most times they coexist. Therefore, young people can be better prepared for leadership by instilling them not only a sense of competition, but also a sense of cooperation.

Maybe some people may argue that the modern society is a society full of intense competition, but in some sense the modern industrial society can be better depicted as one characterized by its narrower and narrower specialization and working division. Adam Smith, the greatest economist in history, has figured this tendency as the process of manufacturing needles. Before the age of industry, one person did all the processes on his/her own, including acquiring steel, forging steel into bar, honing needle and boring hole. However, with the coming of modern industry, these processes are assigned respectively to different people: one person undertakes only one process. By this means of cooperation, people can become more skillful and more experienced since their job has become relatively simple. As a result, a higher efficiency can be attained: the quantity of needles manufactured through cooperation will be far more than the total made respectively by six individuals. Modern society works in this manner certainly. No products are manufactured by a single person, no achievements completed by individual, and no cause realized by one great people.

Furthermore, the ever-increasing complexity of the modern world also makes it necessary to cooperate with each other even for those competitors. Take automobile manufacturers for example. In order to reduce cost and market risk, some major producers such as the Ford, the General Motor and the Toyota keep a very close cooperation on research of new products and market promoting. The G.M and the Toyota even use the same factory to produce mutually competitive cars. We live in the same world and inevitably share many things such as water, air, space, and so forth, which determines we are certain to face with the same problems and have the same benefits on many occasions. With the progress of science and technology, the society changes more rapidly; the life becomes more complicated, and the negative effects of human behaviors become more and more manifest. No single individual or organization can deal with all these complexity of modern life. All these require a large-scale cooperation not only between mutual competitors but also between all people through the world.

However, the looming of cooperation is not exclusive to competition as many people imagined; instead, it makes competition more violent to some extent. The six needle workers in a working-group maybe shouldn’t compete with each other as they worked individually before, but they as a whole are confronted with a more violent competition for larger share of market from other groups or factories. The cooperation between the Toyota and the GM does not reduce the intensity of their competition at all; on the contrary, their competition becomes more ferocious than ever as the Toyota is continuously capturing the market share of the GM. On the other hand, competition also urges individuals or organization to cooperate on many areas for the same sake. The relationship between IBM and the Acer, a Taiwan computer producer, provides such an example. Regardless of their competitive relationship at personal computer market, they still decided to cooperate on the supply of computer accessories and even the manufacture of final products in order to deal with their all other enemies in this market. The automobile manufactures cooperate for the similar season, as the above mentioned. Obviously, it is difficult for us to distinguish competition and cooperation for the most part because they are not mutually exclusive. Where competition exists in this world, there must be cooperation. Therefore, when we emphasize the importance of competition, we shouldn’t ignore the role of cooperation, vice versa.

As a conclusion, since the intimate relationship between competition and cooperation, while some leaders in government, sport, industry and other areas attribute their success to a well-developed sense of competition, we shouldn’t ignore the same critical role of cooperation in preparing young people for better leadership. The best education should instill in them both the sense of competition and the sense of cooperation.  (719 words)

Maybe some people may argue that the modern society is a society full of intense competition, but in some sense the modern industrial society can be better depicted as one characterized by its narrower and narrower specialization and working division. Adam Smith, the greatest economist in history, has figured this tendency as the process of manufacturing needles. (why and how??)Modern society works in this manner certainly. No products are manufactured by a single person, no achievements completed by individual, and no cause realized by one great people.

Furthermore, the ever-increasing complexity of the modern world also makes it necessary to cooperate with each other even for those competitors. Take automobile manufacturers for example. No single individual or organization can deal with all these complexity of modern life. All these require a large-scale cooperation not only between mutual competitors but also between all people through the world.

However, the looming of cooperation is not exclusive to competition as many people imagined; instead, it makes competition more violent(这个词,我认为不妥) to some extent. [The six needle workers in a working-group maybe shouldn’t compete with each other as they worked individually before, but they as a whole are confronted with a more violent competition for larger share of market from other groups or factories. The cooperation between the Toyota and the GM does not reduce the intensity of their competition at all; on the contrary, their competition becomes more ferocious than ever as the Toyota is continuously capturing the market share of the GM.

It is always great to be at home!!!

结论是the sense of cooperation与the sense of competition都很重要。
