Issue185: 481 words 40 minutes
Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.
正文
Debates on the role scandals play in our society began since the very day scandals emerged. While different people hold different opinions on this issue, I tend to agree to the speaker. Though not welcomed, scandals, no matter in which field, do help attract our attentions to many important and essential problems which otherwise may be ignored or overlooked.
To begin with, in the field of politics, scandals always play as the impetus for political improvements' taking place. No matter how advanced a country's political system is, it is never perfect and really completed. While facial peace and prosperity may mask its deepest deficiencies, scandals make them under the sun. These may be surprising and even unacceptable to us at first, but it is also them the scandals that force us to think, to improve and to complete our systems and regulations. For example, the Watergate scandal intrigued the congress to think about the necessity of laying limit to the executive's power, and the Clinton's sex scandal makes the issue on leader's ethical and moral standards unprecedentedly hot. Of course, all these scandals are not what we would like to see, but their contribution to the improvement of our political systems is never to be denied.
Further, when it comes to the academia, the role scandals play is also positive in that they strike the alert bell 是不是warning bell 啊?for us to contemplate and self-examine, which is necessary to ensure healthier and further development of academics. As the most focused issue, education is of imponderable importance to us human beings' future development and has long been thought of the cleanest field without cheating, adulteration and so forth. However, now, it is not the case any more: some Professors spare more energy to earn money instead of guiding their students; lecturers are making up or copying others' theses to gain promotion; students are cheating in exams and even buying forged diplomas. Without scandals emerging revealing these kinds of issues, we could not promise that education will not go far away from its right road.
Nevertheless, when facing with scandals, we should be aware that the thinking behind them are more valuable than the events themselves and thus try to avoid focusing too much of our attention to the facial appearance of them, which is valueless and even misleading. Focusing too much on the face of Clinton's sex scandal only brings us entertainment or talking topic after dinner; Blaming on the academic corruptions only make us more indignant and hopeless about the future. Only by intriguing people to think, to contemplate, and then to carry out solutions, could scandals bring us real benefit.
In sum, while scandals are not welcomed, they do benefit us as well as the whole society in its alerting effect for us to think, to self-examine, and finally to improve our deficiencies improve deficiency?, which provides the very impetus for society to move forward.
To think, to … |
