------题目------
For the past five years, consumers in California have been willing to pay twice as much for oysters from the northeastern Atlantic Coast as for Gulf Coast oysters. This trend began shortly after harmful bacteria were found in a few raw Gulf Coast oysters. But scientists have now devised a process for killing the bacteria. Once consumers are made aware of the increased safety of Gulf Coast oysters, they are likely to be willing to pay as much for Gulf Coast as for northeastern Atlantic Coast oysters, and greater profits for Gulf Coast oyster producers will follow.
------正文------
Giving some analysis and evidences, the augment claims that if the Gulf coast oyster producers use the device of killing the bacteria, the producers will make greater profits. Albeit it is credible on the surface, closer examination finds several hidden logical problems.
First of all, the arguer makes a confused comparison. He/she provides that the facts that consumer in California have been willing to pay twice as much for oysters form the northeastern Atlantic Coast as for Gulf Coast oyster, however, the arguer does not explain the reason why consumers are willing to do. Perhaps the taste and making ways of the oyster in the Atlantic Coast are distinct from in Gulf Coast, so consumers prefer to choose this taste. Or perhaps the quality of oysters in Atlantic is better than in Gulf Coast and the size is lager too. Thus, the arguer should provide the explanation for the reason of the higher price.
Secondly, the arguer merely asumps that the reason of decrease of selling oysters is the bacteria problem. The arguer considers the problem not fully, just as above said in the second paragraph, there may be other reasons. Even if it is bacteria that is mainly the reason to bring birth to differences of price, the arguers does not lend the evidence that using the device for killing the bacteria can be suitable for oyster. The device killing the bacteria is or not killing the bacteria in oysters, the arguer fails to tell. Moreover, is the price of the device too high? if so, the cost of the sales oysters will increase. And we do not know the cost is or not surpassing the revenue. In addition, the arguer only provides the device having been studied, whether and when the devices are produced for consumers is not clear. Therefore, the device of killing the bacteria is insufficient to explain it is suitable enough for the sales of oysters.
Last but not least, even if the bacteria of oyster in Atlantic Coast is killed, the reputation has been destroyed, it should take a long time to recover the reputation in order to make the consumers trust the security of oysters. Further, even though the device could produce and sell the producers of oysters, we are not certain that the profit is greater than before. The profit is relevant with the revenue and cost. Granted the revenue is increasing, while the cost is raise also such as increase the cost of device, the profit may be not greater than before.
In sum, the argument should provide the detailed reason why the consumers pay twice price to buy the oyster in Atlantic Coast. The arguer should provide more information that the usage of device and make a further the cost and estimate the revenue of production. |
