Reading
Listening
Conversation 1: MM(名曰tracy)找resident advisor, advisor说没见过她,因为他住北校区,来回by car in case of emergency,(有题).MM说明天要交论文,可今晚light bulb出了问题,还是fluorresent的lightbulb,她用室友的灯泡换了试,还是flicking,所以是接触不良,不是灯泡的问题(有题).
Such as other birds, snake, fox, depend on where they live. 2.Scrub Jay,good at finging nest and then steal and eat eggs of waber.they do not migrate ,so stay on the island all year round.(有题,问wabler如何知道scrab jay) 然后有一个实验,分三组, 3rd组对照组,只有jay. 由此推出Wabler知道Jay, 进而推出鸟类change to meet new enviroment.
关注的东西特别:批评自己接受过的教育,因为没能prepare himself for the world.
下周LAB会听live and recorded 两种sound. 噪音定义(有题):1. unwanted sounds,这种sound会干扰我们要听得内容.eg.talk in the moive theater; 2随机的.not orgnised, unpredictable. Such as radio phone cell.
Speaking
Question 1: What do you think is ONE of the most important characteristics that a teacher should have?
Question 2: Do you always make friends who have different interests from you? Why?
Question 3: The school has recently carried out a new policy that the maximum books that a student can loan for one time is reduced from 30 to 10, and will increase the number of copy machines in the library. The man holds a totally positive attitude towards this news. Firstly, when he was assigned a homework to write an essay in the past, he found out that all the books related to the topic assigned were all on loan, merely because every student can borrow 30 books at a time. He thinks it's totally unnecessary. More importantly, sometimes students only need few pages or chapters in the books, so they can just copy those information they want by using the xerox machine.
Question 4: The passage is talking about Abalene Paradox, which is a behavior that none of the individuals intended to do because they only wanna please others. The professor mostly talks about a psycological behavior called Abalene Paradox. She (or He??) explains this theory by presenting a example of a family. All three members in the family are having a great time staying together and are really comfortable. The dad then comes up with an idea to go downtown and have dinner in the restaurant nereby. Though the mom thinks it's gonna be a boring long way, she still agreed because she thought that's what he wants. The daughter doesn't wanna go there either, but she doesn't wanna let her parents down, so she says yes anyway. After the trip, all of the three think that it was exhausted and the dinner is terrible. Then the daughter and the mom said their original thoughts. Finally, the dad said that he wanted to go there only because he thought it's boring to just sit at home.
Question 5: In the conversation, the woman says that she broke her leg in the soccer team, so she will not be able to drive at all for a couple of months, but she has to go in town to do the teaching stuff. The first way she thinks is just to take a cab every week, but that's gonna cost a lot of money. The second solution is that one of her friends would give her a ride, but in that way, her friend would have to wait for almost an hour as she is teaching the class. Present which solution do you prefer.
Question 6: The professor is mainly talking about how marine animals produce lights. The first example she gives is about deep-sea shrimps. They are those who only produce for a short period. When they are under attack, deep-sea shrimps will flash once to frighten the attacker, and then flash for the second time so that the attacker would have a temporily blind. The second example is that hatchetfish, which is always producing light because it makes them seem like sunshine. Why hatchetfish would do that is mainly because their predators always look for the dark shades when they hunt, so making hatchetfish more like sunlight which serves for camouflage.
Writing
Integrated Writing:
Passage: There has been a long-standing problem that U.S. high schools always have difficulty finding and retaining qualified instructors in science.
Reason 1: The salary paid for those teacher are low.
Reason 2: The teachers are required to take the certification test before they become a real teacher in schools, and this would probably take one extra year.
Reason 3: The courses taught in school are relatively monotonous and not that challenging, so teachers are not willing to take the job.
Lecture: Science Magnet Schools can easily solve these three problems.
Approach 1: Attracting fundings from the society would be helpful to get more money so the schools can pay the teachers at a comparatively high salary.
Approach 2: Only working experience is required for teachers to start teaching jobs. However, they have to take the certification exam during the first year. Nevertheless, they can save one year to really start to work.
Approach 3: Some subfields are provided in the schools, such as cell-biology and micro-biology, so that the courses are with much more fun and the teacher would definitely love to take that challenge.
ATTENTION! There is nothing wrong with using the template of the-speaker-totally-contradicts-the-author. If you caught all the points and explained everything in detail, you can still get a good score, because you've got all the information needed. To some extent, the speaker is saying that the causes mentioned in the passage are not totally true while considering the solutions that science magnet schools can have, and thus challenges the writer.
Independent Writing: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
People who do not work because they have enough money are rarely happy.

blessing~~~ ——lynnnn
by the way, 我今年寒假在上海上GRE的住宿班.
