In my opinion, the ability to establish a good relationship with students is more important than professional knowledge for a good teacher. The reasons are as follow:
Firstly, It can't be denied that knowledge is one important aim of education and professional knowledge is basic requirement for a teacher. However, a more fundamental task of education is to develop the learning skill of students. Therefore, teachers don't have to be Mr. Know-all. One important responsbility of teachers is to teach students how to find methods to learn, think and analysis by themselves. For example, a teacher of mathematics course doesn't have to know all answers to his questions, but he could inspire students to try and find answers.
Secondly, a good relationship between teacher and student could help student form interests on learning. Common sense informs us that we usually learn more from the teacher who we like. For example, a nice and humorous teacher's class could always attractes students' attention and increase the efficiency of learning. While, a teacher who is thought boring or tough by his students is always frustrated by little interest to his teaching and inappropriate behaviors in the class. Hence, a good relationship makes students be willing to listen to teacher's advices and follow their guidance.
Finally, another vital purpose of education is to help students to develop personality, and teacher plays an important role in this process. A teacher willing to listen to and understant student is always respected by them, even by students who are thought hopeless. Teachers advice could help them realize their mistakes and change. The spiritual guidance from teacher could dramtically change their life in the future. However, without a good relationship, they lose the key to the mind of student.
In sum, considering the purpose of education and responsbilities of teachers, except for good professional knowledge, teachers who could better get on with their students are more possible to make students develop well. |
