Beliefs, what majority of people today have, are sometimes the fundamental philosophy of their live. Some people are very dependent on their beliefs and hold violent opinions to what against their beliefs, no matter it is right or wrong. From this point of view, being adhere to the beliefs could be a two-sided sword. As far as I am concerned, compromising one's belief is more harmful than adhere to them. However, it also depends on the situation.
To start with, beliefs are the basic principle for people's behavior and the moral standard of their lifestyle. People who take their beliefs seriously usually have a quite positive illusion of life and are usually optimistic. By insisting on their beliefs, they will refuse to do those things that rejected their beliefs. Just like the Mark Twain said, "Don't be part with your illusions. When they are gone you may still exist, but you have ceased to live". In my perspective, the belief share the same role today. The beliefs of oneself is like the skeleton. It not only builds up the basic rule of oneself, but also forms the principle of the moral standard.
What was more, we often hear the story of a successful figure, which includes frustrations in the progress of climbing to the acme. It is the belief that one figure held during that troughs helped to buck up. With firmly adhere to one's belief, he or she can whether the storm.
However, the belief should be based on some ethics. If the belief is immoral and antihuman, people should compromise to them. In this case, insisting on the belief is more harmful for people. Just like the Joseph KONY and other terrorists, their beliefs are disaster for the world.
Taking all the factors into consideration, it is good to adhere to beliefs that are supportive for what you are doing and trying to do to make contribution to the whole world. But, people should be aware of what kinds of beliefs can be insisit on and what kinds cannot be adhere to.

The issue asserts that the surrounding are playing a more important role than the society in the progress of people's decision making. However, in my point of view, both the immediate situation and the society are affecting people's cognition.
First of all, I firmly hold the point that the small environment is the primary factor in shaping the formation of people's attitudes. We have all kinds of attitudes, to life, death, love and so on. During the process of being educate and framing the world view, we are influencing by our parents, teachers and the information we accepted. As the famous psychologist Freud indicated, what we do today is closely related to our early childhood experience. Similarly, people's attitudes toward different issues are greatly entangled with what kind of knowledge and information they perceived. For example, in one of my class survey, we found the percentage of vegetarian in the environmental sciences major is higher than people from various background. During the time they are pursing the degree, they are proportional accepting the theories that having a pro-vegetable diet is helping to solve the agricultural pollution issue. In this case, their attitudes toward diet are impacted by the immediate situation. We cannot deny that the society's trend of diet is being more balanced today. But not vegetable only. For daily life, people's attitudes toward lifestyle are mainly induced by surroundings.
In addition, people from different cultural background hold various attitudes to particular issues. Take the people's attitude toward sexuality. Today, homosexual marriage is more acceptable in United States. Many states carried out the policy that people can register for homosexual marriage. Does it mean that people should share the same view to homosexual marriage? As I said earlier, people from various backgrounds have their own value to specific issue. Minnesota state was moving to legislate for banning gay marriage. I strongly suspect that people who work in that legislation department hold different attitudes than people who work in New York state legislation department.
However, we cannot deny that the small environment is a part of the society as a whole. The mainstream attitudes of the society is influencing the general public. It helps to frame and determine general public's attitudes to what is sin and what is not. As a result, it limits the standard principle of behaviors.
Taking all the circumstances into consideration, I agree to the statement in big picture. At the same time, we also need to confirm the function of society mainstream moral value and attitudes.
